Patmos Tourism

Patmos is a charming island with a serene atmosphere and a traditional character. It is mostly known for its unparalleled religious significance as it is here that Saint John wrote the Book of Revelation (Apocalypse). Therefore Patmos tourism is heavily based on religious travelers seeking to witness firsthand its unique ecclesiastical identity.

Patmos has been greatly developed with many tourist facilities over the past decades while also remaining very traditional. Nowhere is this more evident than in the capital of Chora, where whitewashed houses, mansions, and monasteries line the picturesque streets. A walk through the scenic town unlocks its rustic beauty and testifies to the island’s rich and layered history.

The most important religious center on the island is the Monastery of Saint John, lying atop a hill overlooking Chora. Undoubtedly the most popular tourist attraction in Patmos, it sees thousands of visitors every year from all over the world. North of the monastery lies the Cave of the Apocalypse, where Saint John the Theologian is said to have written the Book of Revelation. The Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi is also worth a visit, located just 1 km from the Monastery of Saint John. For a deep dive into the cultural history of the island, stop by the Folklore Museum of Patmos, housed in a 17th-century mansion.

Perhaps even more so than Chora, Skala, the island’s main port, presents high tourist activity and features many facilities. Here, visitors will find a vast collection of shops, restaurants, and cafes lining its enchanting streets and beautiful bay. As the sun begins to set, this is the ideal spot for a tranquil dinner next to the sea or a refreshing cocktail at a casual lounge bar. For a more lively experience, Skala hosts a vibrant nightlife, with plenty of nightclubs that stay open till the early morning hours, promising endless hours of partying.

The most convenient hotels are found in Skala, offering luxurious living conditions and placing you close to the town’s biggest points of interest. Some more accommodations are available in Chora as well as the lovely villages of Kambos and Grikos. Many hotels have been built following the island’s traditional architecture, providing guests with a highly authentic living experience. Some hotels also offer easy access to the island’s most popular beaches, including Kambos Beach, Agriolivado Beach, and Skala Beach. Those looking to avoid big crowds can visit the more secluded beaches of Lambi, Diakofti, and Agios Nikolaos.

While in Patmos you can move around the island by public bus, with the main bus station being located in Chora. Buses run relatively frequently and connect the capital with many beaches, villages, including Skala, and sights. Another option is taking a taxi, which while more expensive may also prove a more convenient option. The busiest taxi hubs are located near the port in Skala and Chora. Finally, renting a private vehicle is the easiest and most convenient way of exploring the island, with most car rental agencies lying close to the ports.

Tourists can obtain information concerning their stay from the tourist office in Chora, the capital of the island.
