Patmos Skala

General information

Located right at the center of the island, just 4 kilometers from Chora, Skala is the largest and most densely populated settlement in Patmos. It is built around a lovely natural port at the foothills of Kasteli Hill and constitutes the island’s commercial and economic center.

Skala is a delightful maze of narrow streets, where visitors will find traditional whitewashed buildings gracefully mixing the local architectural elements with Italian influences. A prime example of this is the elegant Italian-style edifice that dominates the quayside and now houses a number of public services. It was already a significant trading port in the 17th century and flourished in the 1800s when pirate raids ceased to be a threat and the inhabitants moved from the inland to the coast.

More about Skala

Over the years, following the growth of tourism, many new houses and accommodations have been constructed, while the central square teams with life during the summer months thanks to its nice cafes. Scattered around the seafront and the quaint alleys, visitors will also find traditional taverns and lounge bars, as well as a number of shops reflecting the island’s folk and religious traditions.

There are also a few sights which are really worth seeing. Among them are the 17th-century chapel of Agia Paraskevi, the ruins of the ancient acropolis of Kastelli, Panagia Koumana Monastery and the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi. Excursion boats also leave for the lovely islet of Chiliomodi, which is right opposite Skala and is well worth a visit.

Regular buses connect Skala with the rest of the island and boats offer daily excursions to the nearby islets and to such secluded beaches as the lovely Psili Ammos.

    Tiny and quiet Skala
Skala is the port of Patmos, where the ferries arrive and many fishing boats moor. It is actually a tiny village with many tourist facilities, though. If you come on Patmos after busy islands like Mykonos or Kos, then you will probably be disappointed as it is a truly quiet island. However, if you are looking for some peace in your vacations like we do, then Patmos it is! Skala is a nice place to stay as there are many accommodation options and taverns with great food. For me, Petrokaravo tavern has many delicious local recipes and Art Cafe has the greatest view in Skala. For close beaches, try Agriolivado, Meloi and Hohlakas.
