Famous for its picturesque environment and relaxing beaches, Amorgos is an amazing island to relax. It became famous to the world when scenes of the movie The Big Blue by Luc Besson were filmed there. Away from mass tourism even in high season, Amorgos is an island off the beaten track. The most important sites in Amorgos is the Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa, an amazing monastery constructed against a rocky mountain. A short walk from this monastery leads to the small bay of Agia Anna, a secluded beach with exotic water. Do not miss a visit to the picturesque village of Chora, with the traditional windmills and the paved paths. Amorgos is also a nice place for hiking and hiking paths lead to many nice beaches.
This impressive Monastery was built in the 11th century and it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is the trademark of Amorgos island. Built entirely on the slopes of a rock, this monastery gives an amazing view to the sea. A trekking path leads to the nice beach of Agia Anna.
The Venetian Castle on the rock above Chora was built in the Medieval times. Its location is impressive and gives an amazing view to the sea. A few old and interesting churches are preserved within the castle walls.
Church of Agia Anna
The small chapel of Agia Anna is built on a rock by the sea. It is located in Agia Anna beach and distinguishes for its pure traditional style.
On the way from Chora to Kamari, there is a small church dedicated to Agios Georgios Valsamitis. This church was built in the 18th century and it is a dependency of Hozoviotissa Monastery. The location gives a nice view of the sea.
The Archaeological Collection of Amorgos is housed in Gavras Tower, one of the few Venetian towers that have survived on the island. It includes findings from excavation sites on Amorgos, such as Prehistoric tools, marble sculptures, remains of ancient temples and others.
Gavras Tower is an important Venetian remain in Chora, close to the Castle. It was probably built in the 16th century and today it hosts the Archaeological Collection of Amorgos.
Monastery of Theologos
About 1-hour hike from Lagada, the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos charms visitors with the sense of isolation and the beautiful natural surroundings. Dating from the 7th century AD, this is the oldest monastery on the island.
