WHERE TO STAY? FIND THE BEST LOCATIONS

The most popular locations to stay in Amorgos are Chora, Aegiali, and Katapola.
This is where the vast majority of units are found on the island and the most convenient place to seek for a place to stay.
These three villages are very different and each location has its own charm.

The options that you should expect to find on the island are mainly small hotel units, rooms to let, bnbs, and a limited number of luxury hotels.

Chora, the capital

❤ Our recommendations:
Vorina Ktismata (luxury) • Oasis

Chora is the capital of the island and is located on its mainland at a height of 400m.
It has a Venetian castle "Kastro" (castle), some very old windmills and of course, the village has a very well-preserved traditional architecture with whitewashed cubic houses and narrow alleys.
During evening hours, it gets vivid due to the numerous restaurants, small taverns, and bars.
The central bus station of the island is located here and buses depart for various villages and beaches on the island.
It is considered a convenient place to book your lodging if you want to avoid a car rental.
Many rooms to let and guesthouses are found in the narrow streets and the small squares of Chora.

Katapola (Main Port)

❤ Our recommendations:
Amorgos Pearls (luxury) • Villa KatapolianiAegean of AmorgosAmorgion Hotel

Katapola is one of the ports of Amorgos. It is located on the west side of the island almost 6km down the hill from Chora.
It is a quaint village with many facilities, restaurants, and cafes. Its proximity to Chora as well as to Panagia Hozoviotissa monastery which is the landmark of the island, and the beaches of the west and south part of the island (Agia Anna, Maltezi, and Plakes) is what makes Katapola a popular destination for lodging.
There is a bus stop here as well that can take you to Chora or other villages and beaches too.
You can also take boat tours to some secluded beaches and a ferry for a day visit to nearby islands of the "Small Cyclades Complex".
In Katapola, you will find a plethora of options and there is a camping operation as well.

Aegiali

❤ Our recommendations:
Aegialis Hotel and spa (luxury) • MusesPano GitoniaPlori studiosMiké HotelFiloxenia Hotel

Last but not least, Aegiali is the port of Amorgos which is located on the North of the island. Its distance from Chora is a 30-minute drive and has a very different setting.
It has a beautiful sandy beach while maintaining a more cosmopolitan atmosphere compared to other villages on the island.
Aegiali offers some luxury hotel options and is ideal for families travelling with children who want to stay in close proximity to a nice and organized beach.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

When should I book my hotel?

In principle, you will not have trouble finding a place to stay in Amorgos. Of course, if you are travelling in mid-July/August it is recommended to have completed your reservation already by May since it is the busiest time of the year and hotels sell out.

Where should I book my hotel?

Greeka.com is an online travelling guide about Greece and the Greek islands operating since 1999. We have hand-picked the best hotels on the island and have included them and presented them on our website. By clicking the “Book online” button, you will either, in case of affiliate links*, be redirected to Booking.com and booking.com will handle your reservation or in case of sponsored links, you will be redirected to the official hotel website, where the hotel will handle the reservation. In both cases, there is no extra fee charged to you for this. *Booking.com pays a small commission to us for every booking which helps us to continue our qualitative work and provide you with the best possible information.

Is there another way to make a hotel reservation?

You can contact the hotel by phone or mail. In some cases, you might find some cheaper rates but it is not recommended.

When is the best time to visit?

Amorgos is a very tranquil island. We believe that the best period to visit the island is late June to early September. August is the busiest month on the island with many local feasts taking place (panigiria) in the villages. Still, it retains its lovely laid-back atmosphere.

Don’t wait until the last minute if you are travelling in high season. You might find something that will be overcharged, in a bad condition, or in a not convenient location.

What types of accommodation are found there?

You can basically find all kinds of types. More specifically there are typical hotels, rooms to let, bnbs, campings and there is a small number of luxury hotels and suites too.

Is accommodation expensive?

No, Amorgos is not considered an expensive destination. There are some luxury options but this is not the rule on this particular island.

How much does accommodation cost?

Depends on many factors. An average estimation without including Luxury options, for 2 persons would be around 50-100 euros/per night in high season.

Where is the best place to stay if you are travelling on a budget?

You can find cheap options (30-50euros) in Chora, and Katapola as well as in less popular villages. Note that there are two campings operating on the island one in Katapola and one in Aegiali.
