Sifnos Tourism

Sifnos is one of the most idyllic Cycladic islands, extremely picturesque and charming. Tourism in Sifnos includes many attractions, like gorgeous beaches and coves with crystal waters, traditional settlements, and breathtaking scenery. During the high season, Sifnos thrives with activity, seeing thousands of Greek and international visitors. Yet despite its popularity, the island maintains its traditional character and remains one of the most serene destinations in the Cyclades.

The capital of Sifnos is Apollonia, named after the Greek god Apollo. A walk through the capital unlocks its rustic beauty, as you take in the sights of the white-washed houses, old chapels, and paved alleys. Many of the buildings found in the capital are made with local materials, mainly wood or stone, and constitute prime examples of the traditional architecture of Sifnos. Along with its traditional elements, Apollonia offers many modern tourist facilities, including a variety of restaurants, cafes, bars, and shops. There are also plenty of accommodation options for all different budgets and preferences. Of major interest is the Folklore Museum found at Heroon Square which showcases the island’s cultural heritage.

The village of Kastro is a medieval-era settlement that has often been described as an open-air museum. Having been inhabited continuously since ancient times, it presents a unique blend of archeological relics and medieval constructions. Those visiting the area can walk down quaint alleys and marvel at the Venetian structures, ancient columns, fortified walls, and marble shrines. Just above the entrance to the village lies the small Church of the Seven Martyrs, the most emblematic church and one of the most photographed spots on the island. If you are interested in delving deeper into the rich history of the island, you can visit the Archaeological Museum in Kastro, housed in a two-story mansion.

Artemonas is another wonderful village that is located just a few kilometers north of the capital. It is a popular spot amongst visitors for its timeless elegance, verdant gardens, and world-renowned pastry shops. It also provides wonderful panoramic views of the island and boasts plenty of accommodation options. The port town of Kamaras is distinguished for its tranquil, seaside ambiance and similarly features various hotels and rooms to rent. The small fishing village of Vathi presents a humble character and is preferred by many for its enchanting beach, the homonymous Vathi Beach.

Among the many wonderful beaches on the island, perhaps the most sought-after is Platis Gialos Beach. Boasting golden sand and crystal waters, it provides guests with many facilities and amenities and offers opportunities for partaking in water sports. Apokofto Beach is always busy with tourists because of its scenic location, the monastery that lies atop a rock overlooking the beach, and the famous Chirssopigi Monastery. Other popular beaches on the island include the lovely Kamares Beach, Faros Beach, and the secluded Vroulidia Beach.

The nightlife scene in Sifnos is of course part of Sifnos tourism. Most of the bars on the island can be found in Apollonia and stay open till late at night, playing loud music and creating a party-like atmosphere. For a more casual experience, visit a traditional cafe or a lounge-type bar in the village of Kastro. There are also many seaside cafes and restaurants found on the island’s most beautiful beaches, including Platis Gialos, Vathy, and Kamares.

While in Sifnos you can move around by public bus, with buses running during the summer and connecting the island’s villages and beaches. Another option is taking a taxi, which while more expensive may also prove a more convenient option. Finally, renting a private vehicle is the easiest and most convenient way of exploring the island, with most car rental agencies situated close to the port and in the capital.

Keep in mind that there is a tourist office in the port, along with various travel agencies where tourists can obtain all the necessary information for their trip.
