Heraklion Tourism

Heraklion is the birthplace of Nikos Kazantzakis, one of the most renowned writers of Greece, who grew up in that lovely part of Crete. It is also the cradle of the Minoan civilization, the first civilization in Europe. Heraklion Town is the capital city not only of the homonymous prefecture but of the entire island as well.

Tourism in Heraklion is very developed, with Heraklion Port being the busiest harbor in Crete and the third biggest port in the whole country. It also has an international airport which has been named after the celebrated Nikos Kazantzakis, receiving flights from several European cities. It provides visitors with all the necessary facilities, and there is a tourist information office in Lions Square, where visitors can get all the necessary information regarding their trip. Also, there is a tourist police department for any problems that might arise during your Crete vacation. Of course, you can also find useful information on our Heraklion travel guide prior to your arrival.

Located on the eastern side of Crete, between Rethymno and Lassithi, Heraklion boasts the two most significant archaeological sites on the island, the Minoan palaces of Knossos and Phaistos. Covering a surface of over 20,000 square meters, Knossos is a monumental complex with advanced engineering systems that were truly ahead of their time. It has been associated with some of the most popular ancient Greek myths, including that of King Minos and those of the Minotaur and the Labyrinth. As for Phaistos, it was the second largest and most important palatial center after Knossos and stands in a location of great natural beauty, attracting history enthusiasts from all over the world.

The center of activity is Heraklion Town, a largely modern city that has, nevertheless, retained its traditional, fairytale vibe. The historic Venetian port is dominated by the imposing Koules Fortress; strolling along its streets, you will come across elegant Venetian buildings like the Loggia, as well as ornate Venetian and Ottoman fountains. Besides a number of other landmarks and museums, you will also have the chance to visit the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, which is among the most significant museums in Europe and houses the masterpieces of the Minoan civilization.

Around Heraklion Town, you will find plenty of cafes, taverns, and restaurants, in which to relax after your sightseeing, as well as plenty of accommodation options. Moreover, with several upbeat bars and clubs, Heraklion has a vibrant nightlife scene to pair with its history and is more than ideal for a night out.

In terms of landscape, Heraklion is characterized by a perfect combination of sea and mountain, offering something for all tastes. Along the northern and the southern coasts, you will discover marvelous beaches and seaside resorts, like the world-renowned Matala, Malia and Hersonissos, many of which also lend themselves to exhilarating watersports. At the same time, it is possible to find a plethora of secluded pristine beaches, like Maridaki and Elygia, in which to enjoy a dip in total privacy, away from large crowds. The sublime Mount Psiloritis, the mythical birthplace of Zeus, dominates a large part of the prefecture, as do a number of other mountain ranges, like the Asterousia and Mount Juktas. Thus, Heraklion is a true heaven for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts, abounding in gorges and caves of stunning natural beauty.

Tourism is not restricted to the main town and the nearby seaside resorts, but there are also many other hidden places to discover in the rest of the region. Heraklion’s traditional villages are just the place to experience authentic Cretan hospitality and immerse yourself in the local culture by savoring mouthwatering Cretan delicacies and taking part in colorful feasts.
