Karpathos Tourism

The rich diversity of Karpathos attracts thousands of visitors every summer. This is an island with a strong tradition and gorgeous scenery, age-old settlements, and beautiful beaches, ideal for all vacationers.

Tourists will collect all the necessary information from the travel agencies at the port as no tourist office is available. There is a tourist police at the central spots and the popular resorts of Karpathos, offering immediate assistance to all tourists.

Although tourism in Karpathos has gradually developed over the last few years, the island keeps its original character intact. The capital is Pigadia, which also serves as its main port. There, you will find many accommodation options, from hotels to apartments featuring all modern amenities and with a sea view. If you are looking for a spot to eat and drink, you will find several taverns, traditional cafes, and music bars spread throughout the town. The nightlife of Karpathos is mostly concentrated in the capital and offers both serene seaside spots and lively nightclubs. Pigadia is also home to some historically important landmarks, including the Province House and the ruins of Agia Foteini in the Affoti region.

Olympos lies in the northern part of the island. Isolated from the rest of the island, it has preserved its traditional character, most evident by its quaint architecture and the archaic dialect spoken by its residents. Built around a small bay, Diafani provides gorgeous views of the sea, while the mountainous village of Aperi boasts a rich history and features many archaeological findings. The Ancient Acropolis found in Arkassa is perhaps the island’s most significant site witnessing the island's long history, dating to the 14th century BC. The villages of Menetes, Othos, and Mesochori are also bright examples of the island’s one-of-a-kind cultural identity.

Karpathos boasts some of the most beautiful beaches found in the Dodecanese complex. Two of the most popular beaches are Apella and Kyra Panagia, featuring gorgeous sandy shores and azure waters set among some breathtaking natural landscapes. Arkassa Beach provides the perfect windy conditions for water sports, while the secluded Psoraris Beach serves as a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of busier destinations.

Transportation is a factor that plays a big role when it comes to tourism in Karpathos. You can reach the various points of interest by bus, with the main bus station being in Pigadia. It should, however, be noted that buses do not run very frequently. Another option is taking a taxi, which while more expensive may also prove a more convenient option. The busiest taxi hubs are located near the ports and in the center of Pigadia. Finally, renting a private vehicle is the easiest and most convenient way of exploring the island, with Pigadia having the most car rental agencies.
