Karpathos Menetes

General information

The picturesque village of Menetes is located 7.5 km southwest of Pigadia, the capital of Karpathos. Built amphitheatrically on the slopes of a hill, it is one of the most enchanting villages on the island. Menetes was established in the Middle Ages by residents of the nearby coastal area who sought refuge from pirate attacks. Today it is inhabited by around 390 people.

A stroll around the narrow alleys reveals the flowered balconies and spacious yards which create the charming atmosphere of the village. Traditional white-washed houses with blue shutters and doors can be found in the area, as well as houses constructed in the more modern neoclassical style. The lush green forests, imposing cliffs, and small coves complete the beautiful scenery of Menetes.

The most striking feature of the village is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin which stands at the edge of the settlement. It features a carved, wooden iconostasis dating to the 19th century and its advantageous position provides stunning panoramic views of the island. The Byzantine Church of Agios Mamas lies on the outskirts of the village and houses vibrant frescoes from the 14th century.

The small Menetes Folklore Museum is also located in the village and showcases an impressive collection of archaeological findings, sculptures, ceramics, and icons. Spread throughout the village are various traditional taverns offering authentic Greek charm and traditional Karpathian dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. A few accommodation options are also available and provide guests with comfortable living conditions in addition to gorgeous views of the village.
