Most villages on Kefalonia were highly affected by a strong earthquake in 1953, which destroyed many houses and public buildings. The only village that came untouched by the earthquake was Fiscardo, on the northern side of the island, which stands out for its colorful walls and the picturesque port.

Location: 49.5 km north of Argostoli, on the northernmost spot of Kefalonia Description: Fiscardo is one of the prettiest villages in Kefalonia. Surrounded by beautiful greenery, the centre of activities in Fiscardo is the port, where fishing boats and yachts moor in summer.
Location: On the eastern side of Kefalonia
Description: Argostoli is the capital town and the main port of Kefalonia. It distinguishes for its elegant architecture and serves as a starting point for excursions on the island.
Location: 31.5 km north east of Argostoli Description: Once just a fishing village, the harbour here is the centre of attraction. Around it there are a number of fish taverns and small hotels. Agia Efimia serves as a starting point for excursions around the island.
Location: 25.8 km north east of Argostoli Description: Sami is one of the prettiest and most picturesque villages of Kefalonia. It is close to many beautiful beaches and serves as a starting point for excursions around the island.
Location: 9 km south east from Argostoli Description: One of the prettiest villages on Kefalonia, Kourkoumelata distinguishes for its architecture of traditional and Neoclassical style. Its houses have been built on the slopes of a hill.
Location: 35 km west of Argostoli Description: This village is a short ferry ride away from Argostoli and there are quite a few similarities between the two. Lixouri is obviously smaller than Argostoli but it has a lovely waterfront and elegant architecture.
Location: 9 km south of Argostoli
Description: A village with interesting samples of local architecture, Svoronata is found close to lovely beaches. The surrounding region is lush green and well-developed in tourism.
