hilary.williams1 28 Feb 2010Please make time for Ag EfimiaOn the east coast of Kefaloniais the small, engaging village of Agia Efimia. Wandering through the lanes, the scent of jasmine is overpowering. The gardens are well tended with a good selection of vegetables and vines and flowers trailing over trellises. Invariably a dog and a couple of chickens occupy the yard. Something very noticable about this village is the friendliness of its people, always a wave and "kalimera".
Some old houses remain before the earthquake of 1953. They used to be occupied by shipbuilders, which was an important business on this part of the island many years ago.Down by the harbour are a few tavernas, my favourite being Spiros. They serve good food and are very amiable. Also it is a great spot for "people watching" in the evening.
There is a small beach at the end of the harbour- pebbly and quiet, otherwise there are a few small coves beside the road towards Sami. Agia Efimia is a great central point. It is not far to visit Fiscardo, Assos, Myrtos beach, Dragorati Caves and Mellisini Lake. The beautiful beach of Anti Samos is but a 20 minute drive and close by is Sami, where the ferry leaves for Ithaca- I shall tell you about Ithaka in another review. Car hire is readily available at 'Starvillas' in the centre of Agia Efimia. A holiday in this captivating village is a holiday enjoyed.
