In brief, summer is the best season to visit Milos if you have sunny days and ideal-for-swimming waters as your priority. However, if you want a more authentic experience, mid-spring and mid-fall are ideal for visiting Milos.
Most hotels open around April and close around October, so you'll need to organize your trip in advance if you plan on visiting off-season.

Being one of the most popular island destinations in Greece, Milos attracts numerous visitors, especially during the summer. Most travelers tend to arrive in August, compared to any other time of the year, since this is the hottest month and the best time to enjoy the sea.

Milos, however, is lovely during the rest of the summer, until at least mid-September, when the atmosphere is calmer and you will have the opportunity to visit places that would otherwise be quite crowded. We highly recommend this time span for visiting Milos, as it combines amazing weather and the ideal conditions for a relaxing vacation.

While trying to decide which is the best time to visit the island, it is also good to keep in mind that even the off-season months are not a bad idea after all, thanks to the friendly Mediterranean climate.

Although it may be hard to decide which month is ideal for a trip to Milos, doing so early enough will allow you to create a great vacation plan. Below, you will find more information on Milos and how it looks during each season to help you make up your mind.

Visit Milos in Summer (High Season)

As far as Milos is concerned, August is generally considered the most popular time of the year to visit the island. During the high season in Milos, all the tourist facilities are busy and the island's beaches and landmarks get crowded by visitors from all around the world. Arriving this time of the year guarantees the highest sea temperatures as well, and this is the best time to enjoy the island's cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Weather conditions

August is the hottest month in Milos and every day of the month is sunny. The temperature is usually 22°C and 28°C, although it may feel somewhat colder at night time. Many days in Milos are windy, allowing you to tolerate heat much better and rainfalls are practically non-existent. It is highly recommended to avoid sun exposure during the peak hours for your safety.

Things to do

Due to its excellent weather, the high season is the best time for all sea-related activities. Don't forget to check out the best beaches in Milos or try out some watersports.

One of the most popular activities in Milos during the summer is the boat tours that will allow you to explore the island's fascinating coastline.

Alternatively, you can visit various landmarks on the island, including the Catacombs and the Archeological Museum.

Another excellent option is to combine your trip to Milos with a visit to another nearby island by booking an island-hopping holiday package.

Tips

The most important thing to remember when traveling during the high season is that availability may be limited so it is necessary to book your ferry tickets, hotel and tours at least a few months in advance. Due to the high temperatures, it is also generally recommended to avoid hikes and long walks around noon.

Visit Milos in Spring & Fall (Shoulder Season)

The shoulder season in Milos starts in early June and ends in mid to late July, while it also involves the month of September. This is the best time to visit Milos if you would like to avoid the crowds of tourists that come with August, while also enjoying the benefit of excellent weather conditions. In addition, during early summer and early autumn, the fully operating tourist facilities offer better prices compared to the high season and availability also tends to increase.

Weather conditions

The weather conditions in Milos are generally great at this time of the year. Shoulder season temperatures vary from 20°C to 29°C, with September being the coldest month. The sea is warm enough to be able to enjoy it and rainfalls are rare, although there may be a few rainy days in September. Even though most days are very sunny and dry, the weather does not get extremely hot, contrary to August.

Things to do

In addition to spending time at the beach, the shoulder season is the best time to visit the island's most picturesque villages which are usually overcrowded during the high season.

Due to the lack of August heat waves, the conditions are ideal for seeing some outdoor landmarks and places of interest, such as the Sulfur Mines, the Ancient Theater of Tripiti and the Venetian Castle. This is also the best time to go hiking, an activity that would be out of the question if you visited during August.

The majority of tours, cruises, island hopping packages and other similar activities are also available at this time of the year and they do not sell out as easily as they do during the high season.

Tips

Shoulder season traveling means that you are significantly less likely to experience availability issues. However, it is still a good idea to book your tickets and accommodation ahead of time. Also, keep in mind that some days may be windier or less warm than the others and have some alternative plans, just in case!

Visit Milos in Winter (Low Season)

The timespan from October to May is considered to be the low season in Milos, bringing the smallest number of visitors. Unlike other islands of Greece (Santorini, Crete), Milos has a relatively short tourist season and most travelers see it as an exclusive summer destination. Although the majority of the facilities remain closed for the low season, there actually are a few things to do if you decide to visit Milos during the off-season.

Weather conditions

Milos is a windy island and rainfalls are not a rare phenomenon during the winter months. Regarding the temperature, expect an average between 15°C and 20°C during autumn and from 8°C to 14°C during the winter. Generally, Mediterranean winters are mild and the island looks beautiful even when it is cloudy.

Things to do

The winter weather narrows down the possibilities in Milos. Although you will not be able to enjoy spending time at the beach, unless you are used to cold temperatures, this is the best time to visit ecclesiastical monuments and other indoor places of interest, including the Archeological Museum and the Mineralogical Museum. In addition, you can drive around and discover small villages or spots with a nice view of the countryside.

Tips

If you decide to visit during the low season, keep in mind that you will find fewer ferry crossings compared to the summer, and ferry schedules may sometimes be affected by the weather. Another thing to remember is that you will have fewer options when looking for accommodation or restaurants since most tourist facilities are closed for at least a few months. It is also highly recommended to rent a car so that you can drive around safely and comfortably, no matter what the weather conditions are.
