Karpathos Sights & Attractions

The Province House of Karpathos and Kasos is located close to the port of Pigadia. It is a nice three-storey building with impressive architecture. A center that provides information on the endangered species of Monachus-Monachus, the Mediterranean seal, operates in this building.

The Acropolis of Arkassa is located on top of a hill with a gorgeous sea view. Remains from the ancient till the Venetian times are seen in the area as well as ruins from the ancient temple of Lindia Athena.

The remnants of this ancient city can be seen near the harbor of Pigadia. Among them are the ruins of the acropolis on top of Vounos Ηill, as well as ancient tombs and early Christian basilicas excavated in the surrounding area.

This small church above Kyra Panagia beach is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is locally known as the church of Kyra Panagia. Constructed in traditional style and colors, its location offers an amazing view of the sea.

This cave is a great natural site of the island. In ancient times, it was used as a sanctuary either to god Poseidon or to the goddess Aphrodite.

The small church of Agia Sofia is located close to Arkassa. It is one of the oldest churches on the island.

Sokastro is a tiny rocky islet opposite the fishing port of Lefkos. It is filled with ruins from the Byzantine times and boasts pristine secluded beaches with inviting azure waters. It can be reached via excursion boats from Lefkos.

Kasos is a small but beautiful island very close to Karpathos. It is ideal for peaceful vacations. Its welcoming inhabitants and the natural beauties of the island will amaze visitors. Ferries connect Kasos to Karpathos.

The Archaeological Museum of Karpathos is housed inside the Province House, in the heart of Pigadia. It exhibits findings from prehistoric times, the three major cities of Arkassa, Karpathos and Brycus, as well as from the early Christian settlements and basilicas.

The Folk Museum of Othos is housed in the traditional house of Varikas and Aristotle Stavrakis, a typical example of a fine Karpathian house. The museum exhibits a rich collection of authentic folk pieces of Karpathos.

The ruins of Agia Fotini are one of the most significant historical sites in Pigadia. They are located in a beautiful, seaside landscape.

The archaeological site of Vroukounta features a collection of ruined buildings, tombs, and churches dating to various historical periods that reveal the rich and varied history of the island.

The church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Menetes was constructed in the 19th century using columns from the ancient site of Arkassa. This is the most famous church on the island and provides an amazing view of the surrounding region.

This mountainous islet used to be one with the rest of Karpathos. It boasts fairytale beaches with turquoise waters, a spectacular gorge, ancient ruins and an eerie Saracen settlement. Saria can be reached via boat tours from both Pigadia and Diafani.

The small folklore museum of Menetes displays folk items of daily life on the island and some ancient findings from excavations in the area.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary dominates the mountainous village of Olympos and holds great significance to the area. It is distinguished by its impressive bell tower and vibrant frescoes, valuable icons, and religious relics.

The quaint Panormitis Church overlooks the harbor of Pigadia, offering stunning views of the sea amidst a serene environment.

Chatzivasilis Museum is located in the mountainous village of Olympos and exhibits many of the local folk artist Vasilis Chatzivasilis’ portable works, which are inspired by history, mythology and religion, as well as by the everyday life and folk traditions of the people of Karpathos.

The open-air Agricultural Museum of Piles offers a glimpse into the agricultural lifestyle in the past, allowing visitors to familiarize themselves with tools and techniques that are no longer in use.

The Church of Zoodochos Pigi lies in the center of Diafani and hosts a remarkable collection of vibrant frescoes and religious murals.
