Skiathos is the westernmost island of the Sporades, only two hours away from Volos by ferry. It is a popular place to organize a holiday in Skiathos. It is the most developed Sporades Island from the point of view of touristy facilities and offers goods services, infrastructure, and organization.

Even if tourism is a recent phenomenon in Skiathos island, it has extended very quickly and the commercialization of the little island has now almost reached the ones of islands like Corfu, Mykonos, and Rhodes. Package tourists from Europe and wealthy visitors from all over the world are the main clientele of Skiathos.

The island has only one settlement, Skiathos Town, which is the port and capital of Skiathos. The rest of the island consists of beautiful large beaches, churches, archaeological sites, many supermarkets, villas, restaurants, and numerous huge hotel units.

Holidays in Skiathos is ideal for those who love the exciting nightlife, shopping, crowded beaches, great fun, and entertainment. Nevertheless, the crowded aspect of Skiathos doesn't take away the island's beauty: picturesque walks, hidden valleys, a few quieter beaches, caves, sculpting rocks and small coves are the many jewels one can find in Skiathos if he takes time to explore the island. In fact, Skiathos has provided the setting of a Hollywood film, the famous Mamma Mia movie.

    Excellent place love it
Off next week to Skiathos for the 3rd time. Just love everything about this island, so laid back, plenty to do, great food and wonderful weather and scenery. If you have never been, you must go.

    Sun Sea Sand and Skiathos
So, another years holiday is over and will soon be a distant memory. 2 weeks of sun, sea, sandy beaches, a bit of shopping and relaxation in Skiathos, what more could you want? Did I say 2 weeks of sun? Yes, that would have been nice.

There had been no rain in Skiathos since the begining of May, but there was plenty when we were there. In fact we had 5 days of it!! We were assured on a daily basis it hardly ever rains in the day on Skiathos, normally overnight and if it does rain in the day it only lasts a few hours or 1 day at the most. Unfortunately this year some one forgot to tell the rain God. Mick and I had been looking forward to this holiday for a long time, after a really hectic year and had had some really good feedback about the island. Maybe, we picked the wrong time to see it at its best.

Althouh green, there was very little colour. All the oleanders, bourganvillia and other plants were either dying or had finished flowering. This, coupled with the imense amount of apparant waste land, the delapidated and run down builings, those only partly built give the islnd a feeling of neglect and sadness. I feel short changed, as we had expected something a bit more.

We stayed in Koukounaries but with hindsight should have stayed in Skiathos town. Koukounaries is really just a series of apartments and hotels with restaurants attached. There is the odd bar and stand alone restaurant, but not much else. The supermarkets were poorly stocked and gift shops non existant. Night life is limited to your hotel bar/reataurant. While we are not "party animals" we do like a bit of atmosphere and like to wander around bustling shops or sit in a taverna/cafe and watch the world go by.

Having got the negatives out of the way, now to the positives. The beaches at Koukanaries are extremely good. Koukounaries beach is huge and well equipped, with lovely views. It is also an easy stroll from the hotels etc. Then there are the Banana beaches. Big Banana is a full on activity beach, with 2 beach bars in close proximity both playing their music as loud as they can. The later on in the day the louder it gets, as they both try to out do each other. Again the facilites are good. Then there is small Banana. This is where you can go to get an "all over" tan. There seemed to be a lot of older couples on this beach, although the single sex couples were mostly younger. There is a small beach bar with restaurant and a toilet. It is a bit of a treck to get to both Banana beaches especially when hot.

On the way to the Banana beaches, if you do a left turn at the first sign you see for the beaches and follow the road up it takes to a run down unused hotel called the Xenia (I think). Find your way to the steps on the right behind the hotel and this will take you down to Mystic beach, a small beach with lovely views and an expensive bar and restaurant, used mainly by the boats that anchor up for the day. Also just up the road from the hotels in Koukanaries is Agia Eleni beach. You can get to see amazing sunsets from here.

The whole island is probably no more than 15 kilometres long and has 26 bus stops going from Skiathos town harbour to number 26 at Koukanaries beach. It is only 2 euros to do the whole journey and takes about 25 minutes. The buses run every 10-15 minutes. It is a really good way to get around. We used the buses to go into Skiathos Town on several occasions especially in the evening. The new and old ports are full of restaurants and Papadiamanti Street has a superb range of shops to suit everyone.

Take the time to wander behind the main streets and find the little shops and tavernas. 1901 is a very good restaurant and is situated up behind the church. The Rock and Roll bar is by a flight of steps, which are covered in cushions for people to sit on. The church is up the top of those stairs, although are other ways of getting to it. There is a must see antique shop by the church next to Maria's Pizza restaurant. It has the most amazing collection of things for sale.

The food generally was really good. Our hotel The Panorama served a good selection of dishes that were well cooked, as did the Golden Beach and The Muses hotels, which are either side of the Panorama. If you want simple food then Agustera bar is ok, but for a special meal go to the restaurant just up from bus stop 16, they do the most amazing cheesecake and have a lovely menu. The staff are very excellent, you get a complimentary ouzo on arrival and an almond liquer and coffee and the end of the meal.

So, that's my take on Skiathos. We probably wouldn't go again, but there were lots of people in our hotel and on the beaches who have returned time after time. Everyone has diferent expectations of what they want in a holiday it is just a shame that for us Skiathos didn't match ours. But unless you go, you don't know!!!

    Blessed with gorgeous water
This summer I visited Skiathos for the first time, this natural green island of Greece. University was over so my friends and I decided to go somewhere and celebrate the end of exams. I didn't really know much about this island, except that it had good nightlife and fantastic beaches. We made plans to stay for four days which eventually became a whole week. My family had already booked us a lovely apartment for three people close to Koukounaries, a beautiful area with dense pine forest. People were scattered along the beaches, Skiathos suits all tastes while beaches are blessed with gorgeous crystalline waters and unique surrounding. Banana and Koukounaries are the most famous beaches. Swimming at night was a wonderful experience, this is a memory I will never forget. We ate a couple of times at the restaurants located in the town waterfront but we were disappointed because the food was not so nice plus it was expensive. I recommend you visit the traditional taverns located between the alleys of the town, with tasteful dishes and good prices. Locals are nice and generous.

    Destination for nature lovers
Skiathos was more than I expected. My family and I visited the island 6 years ago and ever since, Skiathos has become a favorite place for my summer holidays. This year my work didn't allow me to spend more than 4 days here but I was still happy that I enjoyed all of them. For those who don't know this place, I can only say that it is a green paradise.

I can surely recommend many places for you to visit starting from the crystalline beaches. Banana, Vromolimnos and Aselinos are the perfect choices to relax. Lalaria is one of my favorite beaches to swim with transparent waters and rocky surrounding. It is accessed only by boat but it is worth visiting at least. The centre of Skiathos is very cosmopolitan and during the peak season it is filled with a great number of tourists.

Skiathos is an island gifted by nature for its green vegetation and fantastic paths to walk. The taverns in Skiathos offer great food, some of them might seem a bit expensive but they all promise quality in taste. It is a nice alternative for families as well.

    Beautiful island for families
Hello, I wanted to comment on Skiathos because it might be the best island if you like very good sandy beaches combined with lots of flora. We stayed at Troulos location with our 2 kids in June 2010 at Zachos Hotel. It doesn't have a view to the sea (apart from one or two rooms I think) but it was cheap, and nicely located in the middle of the island (Troulos), close to Koukounaries beach. Troulos is not near the city which is a negative for shopping and late night clubbing but it's quiet and naturally cool. There's a market right next to the hotel for the important stuff plus a couple of very good bar-restaurants with free pool use and live football.
Skiathos is amazing, even the sun is kinda different, people told us about it but we didn't believe, it's just perfect! I wish we had more time to visit more places but to be honest, we'd probably be spending most of the time like we did: big breakfast, morning swim, food, drinks and chilling with the kids for the rest of the day at the bar across the street :)

    A green paradise
Skiathos became one of my favorite places to go for summer. Minutes before we reached the port I was surprised by the green beauty outspread to my eyes and I was looking forward to explore every little corner of the island. Skiathos Town is the only tourist settlement of this small island. However, in the peak season it becomes very crowded but I was lucky enough to have witnessed two days of great cultural events which took place there.

The beach of Koukounaries was nice, full organized with bars and cafeterias but extremely crowded for me. On the other hand, I really liked Aselinos beach, which is on the northern side of the island. The waters are quite deep and crystal clear plus it is the ideal beach for those who want to have some quiet and relax.

Also there are many taverns and I have to admit that I was very satisfied with the local food. Those who love ancient culture will be happy to see the Bourtzi, a fortress that was built in the 13th century, monasteries and the home of a famous Greek writer. His house is now a museum with great documentation of his life.

    Pure Mindless Fan
As a traveler I am never sure if it was geting a package holiday just to relax somewhere without any sightseeing or new experiences. Last year, I felt like trying to be a lazy tourist abroad and guess what, I got so lucky for a last minute booking. First time in Skiathos and I have to say I don't know if the 2010 summer will look like after the Greek financial crisis but the august of 2009 was magic. Great food but overpriced coffee. Great measurements in drinks and everywhere I would see happy faces.
Expect surreal moments like I experienced the Last Man Standing a drinking competition in a George's bar where someone Bouzalas guy I figured was somekind of local poker celebrity and won a lifetime supply of beer who later denounced after agreeing to his girlfriend nagging about his health. I remember once met an old guy who after talking in a rainy night outside the only Irish pub of the island about asking how would I bring my wife there who phoned me and wanted to join as she got bored alone in the room, this Vagos guy (or was it Gavos?) lent me HIS CAR KEYS to help me out.
An island with excellent beaches especially Koukounaries, Banana and Agia Eleni made it my best Greek experience, after my first time in Plaka of Athens last decade.

    Impressions and memories
The beaches and the crystal clear sea are a huge draw to Skiathos. They are all blue flag. The main ones are all reachable by frequent local bus service. Skiathos Town, whilst very busy in July/August, is picturesque with lots of nice yachts in the harbour and is nice to stroll around. It also has its fair share of clubs and some nice bars. There are plenty of places to eat. If not staying in town, there are also lots of places to eat around the island in the small hamlets. There are some monasteries but have not visited them yet. Plenty of boat excursions- cannot go to Greece and not get on a boat. You can get to Skopelos and Alonissos from Skiathos. Both very beautiful islands. There is an open air cinema owned by a man from Aberdeen.

The island is very green and also hilly but the views from the hills are just breathtaking. There are plenty of areas which are good for walking. Some areas also have water taxis to take you back and forward from Skiathos town which is rather quaint and feels very Greek and a nice change from the bus. The bus is great and cheap but a sense of humour and a sense of adventure required as it gets really busy, especially in high season.

Greek food can be very tasty but simple and my experience has been mostly positive. Outside of Skiathos Town, it was quite expensive last year. There is so much competition in the town that bargains can be found. Coffee is nearly always instant although I dare say you can get greek coffee. There are lot of tavernas on the beach. Greek yoghurt/greek honey and fresh fruit makes a nice dessert. There are lots of different types of restaurants especially in the town.

The beach bars could improve their food and keep the music down a tad. I don't mind music, it is just that it caters only for a minority taste and sometimes was exceptionally loud. Each beach bar played its own music too on Koukanaries. It kind of spoils this beautiful (peaceful!!!) location. They must be on the ball to ensure they keep their blue flag status for the beaches. Hire a choir and yhis will let you get around to other more quiet beaches and also let you see a bit more of the island. Do not phone a taxi to collect you. If you are not in Skiathos town you will pay for the taxi to come to you and then the cost of your journey. If waiting for a bus at night, taxis will be cruising to negotiate your fare.

    Superb island
I am going to Skiathos 6 years in the row and my sister loved it so much that she and her husband had a villa built there. The beaches on Skiathos are faultless and there are plenty of monasteries to visit. There is also a Dog Shelter where you can go and walk the dogs or just go for a visit. Skiathos is very green, but the bad thing is that all these trees bring insects. Take lots of insect repelent, you will need it all!

Food is delicious, every year it gets better. Taverna Alexandros just behind the church at the Old Port in town is excellent. Typical Greek music and wonderful value for money cuisine. The owners are so friendly and the taverna is just off the main trek so very relaxing.

The only problem I have on Skiathos (although it is getting better from year to year) is with credit cards. Be prepared that some small places (gift shops, small taverns, beach bars) will turn down your credit card and will ask for cash. It came as a shock for me in the first time when the kind waiter told us that they didn't accept cards, but it seems that this is the rule there. The only place that cards are accepted without any suspicious glance are the high class restaurants and hotels.

    For fun and good beaches
Skiathos is a small island and you can see most of it in 3 or 4 days, so you will have time to island hop in the other two islands, Skopelos and Alonissos. Skiathos has definitely better beaches from the other two, because they are more organized and it is easy to go. Instead, the beaches of Skopelos and Alonissos are more rocky than sandy and bus timetables are not that frequent or trustful.

Skiathos has great nightlife. I loved the beach bars and the clubs in Kastro. I liked the green and the forests just above the beaches. Koukounaries is surely the best beach to swim, but Ftelia and Agia Paraskevi were also adorable. A boat from the town makes the trip to the north, where you will see some amazing sea caves, the Lalaria. Ferries to Skopelos are very frequent. Both islands are beautiful but different. Skiathos is for fun, Skopelos and Alonissos for relaxing.

    Beaches for every taste
Skiathos town and island is one of the best places I have ever seen and visited. Small traditional island, perfect for rest and doing nothing on the beach, more than 60 beautiful beaches. I think that the main quality of the island are beaches for every taste, clear water, traditional town and restaurants. Food was good and cheap except port restaurants. Lot of very good fast food, gyros pita rocks! Also Mythos beer is good. To make the town less busy, maybe you should dislocate the port from the center of
    Skiathos
Town. You will not make a mistake to go to Skiathos. It is one of the best Greek islands I have visited and it has the most gorgeous beaches. Do not be only on one beach, see all of them! Maratha and Lalaria are amazing. Could be better if also the beaches can be a night attraction, you know, with lights to have a night swim and beaches bars on the sand to play loud music.

    Enjoyable holidays
It was a long trip from Thessaloniki to Agios Constantinos by car and then by ferry to Skiathos, but we had the chance to see lovely places in Greece. We rented a car from Thessaloniki airport and had to go to Agios Constantinos, about 7 hours away, to get the ferry because ferries from Volos don't take cars, only passengers.

The first thing to see as you arrive in Skiathosis the big clock tower and the small green island in the port. The town is so lovely with those narrow streets and the beautiful cafes. The best cafe was in the old port (don't remember the name) and it had pillows instead of chairs. Smart idea!

You need transportation to get all over Skiathos because the island is big. Even though we enjoy walking, we would not walk in Skiathos except maybe from a couple of beaches close to the town. The western part was very green and had annoying bees. Have a gel for bee sticking just in case.

Bars and clubs are great but be careful with prices. A beer might cost 5 euros in one place and 10 euros in the bar right next door! The same happens with restaurants, so check the prices in the menus before you enter.

    Swim in fabulous beaches
It was our 3rd visit to Skiathos this year. Wherever we go for holidays in Greece every year, we make sure to spend 3-4 days on this gorgeous island!! This time we stayed in a hotel close to Vromolimnos. The hotel was in dense pine forest and we used to go trekking every morning and then go to the beach. We didn't rent a car this summer because we had done it the two previous times and had already seen all Skiathos. Actually, it is a very small island and doesn't have many things to see, expect for the house of a literature man (don't remember the name) in the town and a couple of monasteries around it. This year, we just stayed in Vromolimnos to swim and relax, which is what we needed to do! Skiathosis a wonderful place to relax and swim in fabulous beaches. Beach bars make the atmosphere more lively and fun.

    Keep bees and insects away
Best thing on Skiathos were the beaches: especially Banana, Koukounaries, Lalaria but there are also other excelent beaches there. Its worth laying on other beach every day. Visit as many beaches as you can. They have great sand, crystal clear waters, best view.

Skiathosalso has great bars and very nice tavernas. We recommend eating especially in the tavernas that are on the city guide. It is a great idea with the city guide that is free and you can find it at almost every kiosk. Very helpful. You will not regret that. We haven't done that in the first place and we have regret that. In the town, try the shops that are no on the main alley, they are a bit cheaper. The most interesting with cafes is the one where you sit on pillows on the old port.

Extend and develop the parking lot in Skiathos. To keep the island as it is now and not to transform it in what Corfu island has become with all those international hotel chains. Keep it wild because it is very beautiful as it is now. In some parts of the island, there were too many bees, we did not feel very comfortable there and unfortunately we got bit by one. I think that the autorities should do something about that as there are people alergic to bees.

    Romantic and green
Skiathos is a very nice island with lot of green. It's graphic and you can have wonderful time there. You can have fun either you like calm holidays or wild one. You can walk in the village of Skiathoswhich is very romantic and you can eat at a restaurant near the port. Skiathos also has great beaches where you can enjoy swiming and spend your day at a beach bar. For those who wand to get wild and have fun, Skiathos is the perfect island. There is a street in the center of Skiathos by the sea where there are all the clubs. The choice is yours, as many clubs play loud music while others are lounge. Some beach parties take play in the beaches and they get leaflets to inform people about them. Beaches are so nice and clean and the best thing is that there is greenery around them, which is not the case in the islands of Cyclades. Koukounaries is the best beach for me and Banana is also nice. A cove of Banana is for nudists, so pay attention not to go your children there!

    Have more flights
Why is there only 1 flight from Athens to Skiathos during the peak season and this flight leaves late at night.
We arrive in Athens very early in the morning and then have to wait all day for our flight to Skiathos.

    Plaza Hotel Skiathos
This hotel has been our home from home for the past 2 years and this year we have recommended it to 10 of our South African friends who are all going to stay in July
The manager, Angelo, is really friendly and most accommodating in every way and nothing is ever too much trouble for him

    Lovely beach bar
We have been there in the past and we love Skiathos. Our hotel was in Koukounaries and this is probably the only complaint we have, because the hotel was generally run down and not a 4 star as advertised. In general, pay attention when you book a hotel in Greece because most of them do not pay the international standards. They seem to have their own rules, which can confusing for foreign tourists. Skiathos is a beautiful island and has amazing landscapes. Green prevails on all the other colours. Koukounaries and Banana were the best beaches, we spend most our days there. In Koukounaries, there is a fun beach bar and the bartender makes unbelievable sunrise cocktails! The town is nice but only for a visit. Do not stay there, you will miss all the beautiful nature of Skiathos, except if you want to be close to the port. Plus the town is very busy and noisy in summer.

    Fill in the street holes
I loved the green trees of Skiathos and the sandy beaches! You don't easily find such a small green island in Greece. You could find a new beach in almost every cove. I mostly liked Banana and Koukounaries. If you have small kids, avoid Banana because there are some nudists occasionaly. Sunbeds were a bit pricey at 8 euros for 2 beds and one umbrella. Generally, Skiathos was a little expensive. Drinks rang from 8-12 euros at beach bars. Only food was more reasonable. We usually ate in the town or close to the port. We stayed at Ifigenia Hotel, great central location, good prices, excellent service and clean. The only thing that Skiathos needs is more buses. There are far too many people and it is dangerous the way they fill them up, triple the capacity, with people standing up. Also roads are awful at some points. Fill in the holes on the streets!

    Heaven for a family visit
I had a wonderful experience on Skiathos, especially as it coincided with the premiering of the movie Mamma Mia (you know that some scenes have been filmed on these two islands, right? Actually. I believe it is a shame that Hollywood doesn't shoot more films in Greece and the Mediterranean... They provide prefect settings for every occasion). Skiathos is a heaven for a family visit. The island is very well geared for tourists. I was mainly attracted by the beautiful beaches, especially Banana Beach which I believe is the most beautiful of all beaches. I was also very happy to see Evangelistra Monastery. The town of Skiathos itself is very nice, clean and offers a lot of fancy restaurants and tourist shops. The church with the clock tower was a very nice experience when you are up there. Plan your trip to Skiathos well before hand. Make sure you talk to the hotel before you go and ensure they have all the amenities you need and good water pressure in the shower. Avoid adding breakfast in hotels because it is not good value for the money.

    Improve service
There are some very good restaurants on the island. The best are the old traditional tavernas in the back streets of the town (eg. Folia). There are also lovely high-standard international style restaurants in the town, but unfortunately some of them are a disgrace, especially for the food. There has been a clear change for the worse in the last four years (since I've last been in the island). Also the service (or the lack of it) was horrible in some places. For example, a waitor in a cafe by the port didn't speak at all English and was very rude even when spoken Greek to. The real Greek atmosphere was lost in some places and this is very sad.
  • poppop 26 Jan 2009
    Clean and perfect
The best area in Skiathos is Koukounaries. The beach sand is a light golden colour and the water is clean. The beach in front of the Skiathos Palace resort is very clean and the water is ideal for swimming (no sudden drops in depth). We dined at the Skiathos Palace hotel. The price is upscale and the food was excellent. The chicken was moist and tender and the feta impeccable and the fruits and vegetables were fresh and ripe.

I would recommend staying in Koukounaries. Less crowded and it is surrounded by beautiful trees. The area also contains smaller beaches and coves which are very quaint. Its nice to see that the Greek authorities have preserved this environmentally sensitive area in Koukounaries.

Just the port area (where ferry docks) could be serviced better for those wishing to obtain a taxi to their resort. There was a taxi stand, but people have a tendency to ignore it and just jostle for a taxi instead.

    Build better roads
Skiathos was a recommendation of my friends. Before getting there, I thought it wouldn't be as crowded. The roads needed to be fixed or at least we should be advised that a 4x4 car was needed! As for the other aspects of the island, they were great. We had a very nice time. We loved the green and blue landscapes, the beaches, the picturesque villages and its people, who were very friendly and helpful, great food and vivid nightlife. I’d also like to inform the authorities that the secondary roads definitely need to be asphalted; the cars and motorcycles should slow down, use helmets and respect pedestrians. Apart from that, the price of the beach chairs needs to be lower. A piece of advice for future visitors: book everything in advance!
  • greta1255iis 01 Jul 2008
    Very hospitable people
I expected Skiathos more crowded, but actually it was a rather quiet island. Probably because we went there in the mid of September. Anyway, we loved the island!! Great long beaches and excellent people. We found a lot of hospitality on Skiathos and everyone was genuinly welcoming us. People was stopping to talk to us as if we were neighbours for years! I found this very lovely and would prefer it from the coldness of North Europe people, where no one is actually looking at you. I like in Germany permanently but I believe my heart is Greek. The best to visit on Skiathos is the Castle, where you can sit and have a coffee with view to the sea. Also, go to the house of Papadiamantis, the vibe inside this house is strong.
  • johan 04 Jun 2008
    Great
We enjoyed our stay on Skiathos a lot. The landscapes were beautiful, many trees on the island, amazing beaches. The beach we liked most was Little Banana. The only drawback was that we rented a small flat, but we couldn't pay with our credit-cards. When you travel abroad, it's difficult to get cash to pay hotels, apartments and so on. An improvement would be that all these places accepted credit cards!!

    Beautiful beaches
I chose Skiathos for my holidays because it is an island with beautiful beaches, full of pine trees, vivid nightlife and many options for excursions. Local people are very friendly and if you are looking for peace and quiet, then you are in the right place! I'd suggest you take a tour around the island. The local public transport takes you to almost any place, but the itineraries are not as frequent as they should be. Do not miss the beaches of Banana, Koukounaries and Agia Eleni. Just remember that Banana beach is where nuduists go, so be prepared if you are not practicing nudism.

    Quiet nightlife and nice food
I saw some pictures of Skiathos in a brochure and liked the landscape. That is why I chose this island to go for my summer holidays. In fact, it is a great mix of modern cosmopolitan and old Greek style surrounding. People are very friendly and the whole island has some stunning views. The nightlife was exactly what I was looking for: some great little pubs in the old quarter. I also loved the food, especially the fish dishes. I never had a bad meal on Skiathos and the prices were very good.

    A beautiful island!
I went to Skiathos only because my girlfriend wanted to. The island was beautiful, with amazing landscapes, full of green, beaches with crystal clear waters. There are many places to visit, a lot of sites to see and the public transportation had a very good service. However, it is a small island with a lot of tourist features that made me very tired, no village people, no unique local features. As for the food, this something I didn’t enjoy, along with high prices. I had expected a peaceful and quiet island, but this was not the case. I’d visit Skiathos in the future, but only on a motor-sailor.

    Very beautiful and restful
We loved the island of Skiathos. Even in the middle of high season, it was full mostly of Greek tourists, very beautiful and restful. The beaches are lovely - soft sand - unusual for Greece! The water was clean and clear - turquiose blue - great for swimming - also for the kids. The one just next to the Princess Hotel (bus stop 16) was the best. The city of Skiathos is fun to walk through, but a bit crowded in August. We ate at a variety of Tavernas all over the island. Mostly we encountered delicious fresh food and great service. We were a little disappointed that fish was, however, very expensive and that the "Meze" style of lots of little dishes was not really typical to Skiathos. Still, very good food. Extra buses during August might be nice. At times we really had to squeeze to fit on the bus! Also would be good to have a bit more stoplights so crossing the street outside of the city (near Atrium Hotel) is not so dangerous! Take the slow ferry at least one part of the route - you might see dolphins like we did!

Koukounaries-one of the lovliest places ever
We stayed at the Madraki Hotel in Koukounaries in July 2007. The village itself is laid back, with a selection of bars and restaurants serving mainly traditional greek food, but a selection of international dishes are also available.
Koukounaries Beach is one on the nicest places I've ever visited. The soft golden beach looks as though someone has put tons on silver glitter in it. It is kept spotlessly clean. The water is so clear you can see the seabed at all depths; there are thousands of fish which literally eat out of your hand. There are a selection of bars and several water sports to choose from.
The Mandraki Hotel has been renovated this year and is decorated and maintained to an extremely high standard. The staff are extremely efficient, helpful and friendly.
The Elia restaurant, which is part of the hotel, is wonderful. The food and presentation is excellent and would not be out of place in any European city hotel.
I would thoroughly recommend both the village and the hotel to anyone.

    Negative opinion about Skiathos:
As usual in Greece, they have to improve cleanliness, even if it is better than other parts of Greece. I didn’t find the Carts for my baggage near the airport, if it exists really, you must improve indication. There's too much traffic, motorcycles and cars, near the ferries, it's a mess.

    Skiathos in general.
I have been to Skiathos on 4 occasions, and this June I hope to make it 5. In my opinion, this island has everything. Great beaches, super tavernas, and excellent restaurants.and friendly welcoming people. The way to enjoy it fully, is to go for Greek dishes when eating, not the old standard English meat and two veg. Get into the inner part of the island, by car and find tucked away beaches, enjoy the scenery. Can't wait for June to get here!

    The best trip so far

The Trip: I arrived on Skiathos by plane with First Choice. The trip was very good with no delays. The flight back was three hours delayed

Reasons for going to Skiathos: Have been to the Island twice before

My partner and I know Skiathos island very well having been twice before. This trip we still managed to find new restaurants, beaches and places to visit. In fact it was the best trip so far - we love the island very much. We rented a scooter this time and it just made our holiday seem more relaxed and free - we explored the island more and just felt independent and care free. We stayed this time in Kolios at the Eleni Apartments - which were just perfect - apart from the grumpy owner - the rooms were very clean and well kept - with daily cleaning, bed changing three times a week and clean towels twice a week. We rented an electric fan from the grumpy owner and this made sleeping and getting ready to go out in the evenings very comfortable and cool.

Planatis (Spelling?) Beach is just the best!! We went there everyday, everyone who works on the beach - the lady in the little kiosk the sells the ice creams and water - she is SO friendly and always has a smile and says good morning. I fact all the staff who work on the beach - were always polite and friendly, the hunky boat hire man with the sun glasses and the tan was very easy on the eyes too. The staff in the restaurant at the end of the beach were fabulous, the lady who sit behind the till, the smiley waiter with the curly black hair, his name began with the letter A - can't remember - we ate there most days - the food is really good - a little bit more expensive but everything was so fresh and tasty - the best Greek Salad on the island - and the coolest beer served in a iced glass straight from the freezer - perfect in the afternoon when you need a break from the sunbathing. They need to get the wasp problem sorted out in the restaurant - it can be off putting every five seconds swatting wasps away from your food. On our last afternoon here they gave us a huge plate of fresh watermelon on the house at the end of our meal - they all wished us a safe trip back and said they look forward to seeing us next year.

It felt this time like they were far TOO many English people on the Island - I came on holiday to get away from my fellow country men - it seems us English have discovered the island, and now flock in there thousands - and a lot of middle aged people and this was not the case a couple of years ago. I hope the English will not ruin the place - there’s a few too many "ENGLISH BREAKFAST" being served in restaurants. Previous trips they have always been a lot of young Italian and Greek people holidaying. There’s a local bar called "PANO" - this guy needs to get out more!! This guys needs to laugh and lighten up - he works too hard serving drunk English people who just want to hang out in his bar and fall off the stools after too many bad cocktails - this guy needs some lessons in cocktail making - I had the worst Margarita I've ever tasted - I should have gone for the NO salt option - it tasted like sea water with a tiny twist of lemon - We found the view from "INFINITY BLUE" restaurant just breath taking. We booked a table in the restaurant and said to the owner we were celebrating an anniversary and he gave us the best table in the restaurant and brought flowers to the table - they really looked after us and made us feel very welcome - the food was fantastic too - it's well worth a visit - go before the sun sets to make the most of the view. I really could go on and on - we had the best time ever.

The trip: I arrived on Skiathos by plane with Excel Airways. The trip was very good with no delays.

Reasons for going to Skiathos: We had visited many islands before and wanted to try Skiathos

Idea about Skiathos before arriving: We only knew what we had found on the net. We could anticipate a lot as we have visited Greece many times

    - Island/Area : 9/10

    - Landscapes : 7/10

    - Tree Covered : 7/10

    - Beaches and Waters : 10/10 Great sea and beaches

    - Cleanliness : 10/10 No litter at all anywhere!!

    - Villages : 10/10 Some very pretty indeed

    - Main Town : 10/10 Everything in easy walking distance

    - Food/Restaurants : 8/10 A bit 'same' everywhere

    - Nightlife : 8/10

    - Local People : 10/10

    - Accommodations : 10/10

    - Activities : 10/10

    - Excursions : 10/10

    - Sightseeing : 10/10

    - Prices : 10/10

    - Public Transportations : 10/10

    - Authenticity : 10/10

    - Peace and quiet : 10/10

    - Weather : 8/10 We had several thunderstorms

    - Best Beaches: Koukounaries without a doubt

    - Best Activity: Renting a 4-wheeler and exploring the island

    - Best Bar/Pub/Club: Too many to list

Anything negative about skiathos or needs improvement: Nothing that I can think of.

Recommendations:You can see most of Skiathos island very easily if you hire a car for a few days. Getting to places is easy and traffic is light weather is usually good but beware of thunder

Rate of the overall quality/organization/services of this island/area in comparison with other countries: 10/10.

    Service needs to be improved

    Nationality: Romanian

    Age: 29

    Countries visited: >15-30

The trip: I arrived on the island by car and then by boat with Hellenic Seaways. The trip was good but the boat was delayed. The staff can be a little friendlier

Reasons for going to Skiathos Recommended by friends

Idea of the island/area before arriving: I heard it is a green island with sandy beaches , comparing with the southern ones ( I have been in Paros , Mykonos , Santorini ) which are more " desert " like .

    Best Beaches: Vromolimnos

    Best Villages: Main City

    Best Bar/Pub/Club All were OK

Anything negative about the island or needs improvement: Probably because the Greek territory gets "invaded" by so many foreign tourists , especially in the high season , the staff is not so friendly and hospitable as it should be in an area which has a great income coming out of mainly tourist activities. Also some locals are a little bit xenophobic, and treat the tourists dividing them into Greeks and non-Greeks. They should be more grateful and realize they are gifted with such a beautiful country / they need tourists as most of Greece GDP is made out of tourism. Sometimes the owner of the hotel/restaurant is trying to ?squeeze? the tourists and it gives the impression that he cares too much about the money and less about service . I am not talking about all tourist resorts. You should use an ISLAND COMMENT CARD to improve the hospitability level. When I am talking about local people I mean the owners of the hotels/villas, the restaurant and bars staff

Recommendations: Sometimes the hotels / villas are pictured very nice on the net, but in reality they are not like in pictures. Use the method of finding out where the best places on the island are from people who have been before on the island

Rate of the overall quality/organization/services of this island/area in comparison with other countries: 8/10.

    Wanna stay forever
I have been reading both good and bad about Skiathos on this site and I really think the bad things come from someone who has held their holliday according to a travel-bruchure...

My boyfriend and I went to Skiathos for a week and things havent been the same since we arrived back home. We spend the week on our own without thinking obout where the travel-brochures told us to go. We found our own favorite beaches and our own favorite tavernas. We went up north by "boogie" (the 2-person "beach-boogie" you can rent in the town) and after a fantastic, funny, beatifull trip up the mountains we came to an amazing laguna with mountains on each side and crystal clear water. At that moment I felt total happiness. The beauty we discovered on that trip is without words. The smiles and the frienliness from people living on the island was amazing too. The calmness among people was soothing for the soul.

I really think tourists expect too much when they arrive to the island. Its such a small island and ofcause it will seem crowded with tourists, even when theres only a small amount of them... Then you just have to find the places where there are no tourists and thats pretty easy actually...

Both my boyfriend and I lost our hearts down there and we're dreaming (planning?)on going down there with our kids and staying there for good. After comming home we have really exprienced the difference between a hectic life here and the calming beauty on Skiathos.

You just have to have the right attitude and find the right places on Skiathos and you will find that the island is a piece of paradise....

    Nice but some disappointing things
    Nationality: German

    Age: 38

The trip: I went first to visit the are of Pelion (amazing) and then we took the boat to Bolos. It was a fast boat and the the trip was fine.

Reasons for going to Skiathos: The main reason is that it is close to my friend's family house on the mainland. Mainland was great but wanted to go on a green island. I love the fact to be surrounded by water.

Idea before arriving: That it would have great beaches, beautiful landscapes, beautiful villages, sea food and that it would be a green and small island.

Expectations and opinions: It met my expectations because is really beautiful but I found it much too touristy. The island must had been a heaven 20-30 years ago. Now, most of the beaches are surrounded by hotels. It seems that there are many packages trips on this particular island as there is an airport and that sometimes you feel that things were made for brits. Many pubs but you can only find pubs were brits go: Rhodes, Zakynthos, etc...

Favorite thing about Skiathos: The friendliness of the people, the food, the views etc...

Negative opinion: The beach of Koukounaries is really disapointing! It is said that it is an area for the protection of the nature but how can they protect the nature with watersports on the beach and the noise of the jet skis!!! And I have never seen any beach in Greece with such amount of sun beds. The beach of Banana just next to it is much better!

Recommendations: Road are small, people drive like crazy and no sidewalk. Be aware.

No, I don't think I will go to Skiathos again. Want to also visit Alonissos, Skopelos and Skyros.

Nostos Village (week of 28 April - 6 May 2006)
Good - friendly bartender; excellent view of the ocean

Bad - when we first got there it took them 30 minutes to check us in. The receptionist left us waiting in the lobby and never came back to see how we were. The room had no working TV and we had to wait again to get it fixed. We had to follow up several times to get simple items like a blow dryer and iron. Very poor customer service.

Ugly - maid service. The cleaning ladies spoke to us in Greek, even when we could not respond, they become very upset and downright rude. Lots of facial gestures, sighs, etc.

    Do not recommend this place.

    Nice place to visit
    Nationality: Norway

    Age: 53

The trip: I arrived on the island of Skiathos Greece with Star Tour. The trip was fine.

Reasons for going to Skiathos: I have been on many islands in Greece, both in the Aegean and Ionian and wanted to try this one.

Idea before arriving: I thought it was a nice place to visit as some of my friends were already here and tell good things about it.

Expectations and opinions: It met my expectations. It is a beautiful island with dense vegetation and nice beaches.

Favorite thing about Skiathos: Beaches and cleanlyness of the waters.

Negative opinion: No negative opinion except that it is a little bit too touristy.

    Recommendations: Try little banana beach!

I would love to go back to Skiathos. I really had nice time there.

    Expensive, crowded but beautiful
I quite liked Skiathos even if I found it a bit expensive and crowded. The port of the island has a picturesque old part were it is a pleasure to have a night walk.

The rest of the port is modern, full of restaurants. The town is cute, with some very beautiful mansions and a lot of narrow alleys and steps. If you avoid the main road were are all the bars and pubs (and all the crowd) you will find walking around the capital very pleasing.

The beaches of Skiathos are famous for their beauty and for the fact that they are surrounded by trees which are descending to the sea; it is true, they are very impressive but, unfortunately, they are also crowded. If you are a nudist, check out the beach called Little Banana, after the Koukounaries Beach; it is small, with sand and pine trees.

    Amazing Skiathos
Skiathos was everything I needed. I can say I had some of my best holidays on this island.
I really liked the fact that it?s such a verdant place, I enjoyed its many bars and restaurants (you can find every kind of cuisine on the waterfront of the new port) and I really loved its long sandy beaches; a real paradise?the beaches of Koukounaries and Lalaria were my favourite ones (unfortunately they are the favourites of thousands of people). The first one is endless and sandy with clear waters and the second one is reachable only by boat; it has white sand and azure waters and it is surrounded by huge, gorgeous rocky formations?a pure beauty!
Hope I'll manage to get there again next year!

    Touristy Skiathos
I had heard that Skiathos was a superb island, the best of the group of islands called the Sporades?Well, I don't totally agree! I found Skopelos and Alonissos much relaxing, much beautiful and much authentic that noisy and extremely touristy Skiathos. It is a beautiful place with some of the best beaches of Greece but its inhabitants and the grow of tourism has turned it in a ?fake? place, too organised, too expensive (comparing to other Greek islands), too build up, as if it was make only for tourists. The only parts of Skiathos I found that had kept a bit of there character and authenticity are its old port, some parts in the city (when you get lost in its streets) and a very few beaches.
