Skiathos Mamma Mia Movie

With its lush pine forests and Blue Flag beaches, Skiathos is the perfect setting for a movie-like vacation. If you are a fan of the immensely popular Mamma Mia musical, though, you have one more reason to visit this enchanting island! Though most of the filming was done in neighboring Skopelos, it was Skiathos that provided the ideal shooting location for at least two of the movie’s most memorable scenes.

The starry cast that arrived in Skiathos for the shooting includes Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgard. The most easily recognizable location is, undoubtedly, the old port of Skiathos, with its picturesque Bourtzi peninsula; it is here that the three fathers of Sophie meet for the first time. There are also hilarious scenes of a taxi chase between Brosnan and Firth through the narrow alleys of the port in their attempt to catch the ferry. The shooting was a public event, with lots of tourists gathering to get a glimpse of the stars, while many locals were invited to act as extras.

The opening scene, in which Sophie sings I Have a Dream while writing the wedding invitations for her three fathers, was also shot against the backdrop of Skiathos Town’s old rooftops and the belfry of the church of Agios Nikolaos. The excellent cinematography, along with the unique sights of Skiathos create a truly remarkable visual effect.
