Zakynthos Monastery of Eleftherotria

The Monastery of Eleftherotria is one of the top landmarks to visit in Zakynthos. Its building is one of the most impressive ones on the island due to its unique architecture.

It is a women's monastery situated in a valley at Lagopodo village, at a close distance from the church of Agia Mavra. It was built in 1962 and although it is fairly new, it bears great cultural importance. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is run by the nuns who reside there.

Its building complex includes a church hosting beautiful murals, frescoes and a carved altarpiece made of wood. You will also discover a lovely courtyard with a garden and a religious gift shop. Some parts of the monastery are closed to the public, such as the cells.

Note that there is a dress code to enter (long skirts and covered shoulders for women and long pants for men).
The monastery is open from 08:30 to 12:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00.
