Athens Psiri

General information

Psiri Neighborhood in Athens: Psiri is located north of Monastiraki and is one of the oldest neighborhoods.
In this area, you will encounter many abandoned buildings, even though the district has changed a lot and the atmosphere of decadence has been balanced out over the years.
Some of the neoclassical buildings have been restored and a lot of trendy bars and shops have opened, making the neighborhood one of the liveliest in the city!
Nowadays, it attracts many young Athenians who enjoy the blend of traditional and modern character of the area.

The history of Psiri dates back to the first years after the Greek War of Independence, when settlers arrived there from the countryside. However, the construction of the area started around the mid 19th century.
For many years, Psiri was nothing more than a typical working-class neighborhood that even had a bad reputation due to criminal activity.
The setting started to change during the 20th century and Psiri is now a well-developed and popular meeting point with a vibrant nightlife, featuring various taverns, bars, cafes, boutiques and art galleries with an authentic atmosphere.

What to do

You will find many shops with affordable products and cozy restaurants with live Greek music that receive a great number of visitors, especially during the weekends.
Psiri is not so popular among tourists (compared to Syntagma, Monastiraki, or Plaka), creating the perfect conditions for a night out at a place with an authentic character.

Although Psiri offers many charming cafes, restaurants and shops to visit during the day, the scenery is much different at nighttime, when the local bars come to life.
Famous for its nightlife, Psiri is popular among young people and the music creates a lovely atmosphere.
Also, don't forget to appreciate the local street art that adds to the scenery.
