Location: Zourva

A wonderful house of religious worship on the eastern side of Hydra, the Monastery of Panagia Zourva, also known as the Monastery of Genniseos Theotokou, is a women’s monastery run by a handful of nuns! It features a simple triple bell tower, while its main attraction is the icon of the Virgin Mary, which was discovered in 1776 and is now gilded and silver plated!

The temple’s interior boasts a plethora of icons, a large chandelier, and simple, whitewashed walls, whereas the nuns that reside inside Panagia Zourva also take care of the monastery’s surrounding gardens and large trees! Plus, there are a number of rooms available for visitors, such as priests and congregation members.

The Monastery of Panagia Zourva can be reached by following a large, two-and-a-half-hour trekking path from Hydra Town or renting a water taxi and hiking for less than half an hour! In addition, it hosts a small celebration on the 8th of September, where after the morning service, the nuns will offer all visitors coffee, mastic, liquor drinks, and desserts!
