How to get to Macedonia?

Flights

The largest airport of Macedonia is the International Airport of Thessaloniki. This airport operates domestic flights from Athens, Crete, Corfu, Chios, Lesvos, Rhodes, and other Greek airports. It also receives international flights all year round. The airport of Kavala receives domestic flights from Athens and many charter flights in summer. The airports of Alexandroupolis, Kozani, and Kastoria receives only domestic flights from Athens.

Cars

Macedonia is a nice region to explore by car all year round. There are many car rentals at the airport of Thessaloniki, in Pieria, Kavala, and Halkidiki, that constitute the most tourist regions of Macedonia. Roads in Macedonia are good, especially the National Highway Athens-Thessaloniki and the Egnatia Odos Igoumenitsa-Alexandroupolis. The country roads are good but have only one line, so extra attention is required.

Buses

KTEL (suburban) buses are much used to get around Macedonia. Buses from Athens to Thessaloniki are daily and regularly. From Thessaloniki, there are also buses to all towns of Macedonia.

Trains

There are daily regular and express trains from Athens to Thessaloniki. Recently (February 2013) the trains from Thessaloniki started to operate again in western Macedonia.
