The total surface area of Macedonia is 34,036 sq.km. To the east, it borders with Thrace, to the north with Bulgaria and to the west with Albania while to the south with Thessaly. The largest part of Macedonia is covered by mountains while 34,7% is flat. 25,6 % consists of gentle slopes and 39,4% is mountainous. Macedonia has many fertile valleys that are crossed by rivers. The longest of the rivers is the Nestos with 143 km length expanding along with the Greek land.

The geography of Macedonia is well-demonstrated with mountains, natural lakes, and basins. Of major interest are the natural resources of Macedonia including copper, chromite, manganese, and gold. It is also characterized by lush vegetation which covers at least 25% of the total surface in the mountains of Western Macedonia. The climate of Macedonia is warm with dry summers and autumns. Thessaloniki is the capital of Macedonia, a commercial and economic center, the second largest city of Greece.
