Visitors are served by the nearest airports of Chania and Heraklion, that operate domestic flights from Athens and Thessaloniki and also charter flights from various European airports in summer. The flight time from Athens to Chania/Heraklion is 45 min. There are frequent buses from Chania and Heraklion to Rethymno and the trip from both these towns is about 1 hour.
There are no direct ferries to Rethymno. Tourists who need to go to Rethymno must take the ferry to Chania or Heraklion, the two closest ports in Crete. There are daily ferries from the port of Piraeus in Athens to Chania and Heraklion. In summer, the port of Heraklion is getting very busy and operates ferries to Athens, Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Karpathos and other islands in the Aegean Sea. The airport of Heraklion is also very popular and receives internal and charter flights from abroad. Many low-cost air companies also arrive in Heraklion.
