Rethymno is located in central Crete and lies between Chania and Heraklion. It is the third-largest town in Crete and is known for having the most picturesque town showcasing medieval architecture. The promenade that starts from the old Venetian Port is the busiest street throughout the year, as Rethymno has a university and, therefore, many young people who enjoy clubbing. The prefecture has developed a lot over the years due to the increasing tourism industry to provide travelers and guests with amenities of all kinds.

In regards to history, the earliest settlers of the region belonged to the Minoan period. The region enjoyed a sovereign status to such an extent that it had its own coinage. However, its lack of mention during the Roman and Byzantine periods shows that it had lost its importance to the then rulers. However, with the advent of the Venetian and later Turkish rule, the region slowly gained its original prominence.

Culture developed a lot in the Venetian times. Impressive public buildings and private mansions that you can still admire in Rethymno Town were erected during that period. Trade brought economic power to the inhabitants and the harbor of Rethymno was enlarged to welcome ships from all over the Mediterranean. The Turkish occupation in the 16th century held back the area's further development. Cretans made several attempts to set themselves free, finally accomplishing their goal in the early 20th century.

The influence and traces of these two occupations are apparent in the town's architecture. In every part of the Old Town of Rethymno, you can see Venetian and Ottoman structures, such as mosques, public baths, Catholic churches, and fountains.

Apart from the town, the rural and coastal regions of Rethymnon are also stunning. There, you will witness the typical Cretan landscape, sometimes wild and other times fertile, with many traditional mountain villages, lakes, gorges, and Byzantine monasteries around.

Last but not least, the beaches of Rethymno, featuring golden sand and crystal-clear waters, also dot the landscape and attract thousands of visitors every summer. The most popular beach is Preveli, succeeded by Platanias and Panormos.

    Nice City
I visited Rethymno during the first week of June in the year 2017. It was a one-week holiday trip to Crete. I have been many times in Rethymno. This was my 17th visit to Rethymno. I have always lived in the same hotel Sentido Pearl Hotels. The hotel is located at the nice Beach Road close to the sea. This hotel is very good. Fine rooms, good food, excellent service and in the hotel are working very friendly people. In Rethymno is much to see. You can go to the Venetian Harbour in the Old Town. This place is very romantic with good seafood restaurants. Close to the harbor is the Fortezza. Very old and a great castle. The Old Town is very interesting with many small nice shops. Every week there is in the Old Town great market. In the north of Rethymno there is a long sandy beach. The beach is 20 kilometers long. During my visit, I made a trip to the Arcadi monastery and to the Palace of Knossos close to Heraklion. In these both fine places was much history to see. If you travel to Crete go to Rethymno I am sure that you will like this town.

    Happy days at Marianthi
Having visited the suburb of Platanes several times, and stayed in different accomodation each time, we eventually happened upon the Marianthi apartments. They are small modest studios (only 10 rooms) and are of a familiarly basic standard. However, the hosts Nikos and Roussa Markoulakis and their 3 lovely daughters give everyone such a warm welcome, they engender a real family atmosphere. The weekly Mousaka night is every Thursday, and completely free to all guests, and Roussa's mousaka is the best I have ever tasted. All you pay for is your drinks from the bar which is also the cheapest one in the resort. If enough guests warrant it, Nikos also does a Sunday barbecue at 12 euros each, and for the amount of food on offer is very reasonable. Sure, most Greeks are friendly and hospitable, but Nikos and Roussa take this to another level.
On both nights, there is a real party atmosphere, and many guests return every year and many long friendships have been made.
Are we going back next year? DEFINITELY !

    Encourage traditional style
Our first trip to Crete was based on a recommendation from a friend. After that, we did not need any more recommendations. Having been to Crete more then 10 times, we just love the place. Crete is a fantastic island with all its historical monuments. We have seen most sites but not all. The beaches in Rethymnon are not the best in the world- too much stones/pebbles- but they work for us.

We love the countryside, in rented cars we have crisscrossed all over the island, been on the main roads but tried to spend most of the driving on the contry roads that have taken us to so many of the great villages on the island with all the extremely friendly people. We have been treated so well by the locals. Treat them with respect (it is their countr, we are just visiting) and you will be treated well, too.

After so many trips in Crete, we just love the food. We have found our favourite reastaurants and it is great to be welcomed back year on year. Greek salad is always good, saganaki is wonderfull and for a main course we can have stiffado, kleftiko, mixed grill, just to mention a few, and they all taste great. Encourage places like Rethymnon to not allow too many modern shops and restaurants. We come to the island to experience some of the greek lifestyle. It is not nice to see that some shops are owned by foreigners.

    Plan before you go
I had a wonderful trip! Perfect in everything! Crete is a fantastic island, where you can find everything you desire for a holiday: relax, amazing landscape, wonderful sea, equiped beach, night life or romantic evening...and the food? gorgeous. Take the lodge in Rethymno is the better choice, because the city is near the most beautful Crete's beaches, is near the main road and the city...is amazing! In Rethymno you can find all do you want, and the beauty of the town is indescribable!! Plan in advance the places they want to visit because Crete is a very big island and it's impossible to visit all! I suggest the beaches around Rethymno and also try the inland with the beautiful and small villages. Some people there are still not much familiar with tourists and may look strangely at you sometimes, but don't worry, they are no dangerous at all. Eat in small taverns in the mountains, this is where you find real Cretan food, not in the tourist places.

Much fun and good quality of tourism
Rethymno is a lovely town that comes alive at night. Very friendly people and great nightlife. Karma is the best club in the town and we went to a lot, believe me! We also loved the beaches, although some should need cleaning. The villages around Rethymno are not as picturesque as in other Greek areas but the people were nicer and treated us traditional sweets and drinks, like kaltsounia and raki. A great place to go, much fun and good quality of tourism.

    Plakias
This charming little harbour has a lot of good fish restaurants, shops, and accommodation (apartments, rooms and hotels).
You can make great walks in the village on the seapromenade. To go to the start of greater walks (in the canyons) you best need a car. or take a taxi (they are used to it, and show you where the walking trips are beginning). There a beautiful beaches and little bays in the neighbourhood were swimming is delightfull.
You can make a lot of trips to visit little villages ans spots with the car. Rethymno is only 30 min drive to plakias.
We stayed one week in Plakias and were not boring at all
lakias - 30 minutes drive on the south coast of Crete.

    Rethymnon
Rethymnon is the third largest city in Crete. It is spread out around a curving bay with a sweeping stretch of beach, a modern harbour and an old Venetian port.
Its narrow meandering streets leading from the sea have an architectural mix but Venetian and Turkish styles predominate with rounded stone arches of the Venetians topped by the wooden overhanging balconies of the Turkish.
Many of the town centre streets are too narrow for traffic which makes more pleasant walking.
The city is overlooked by a huge Venetian Fort offering panoramic views of the sea.

Take some bottles of raki with you
Rethymno was a quiet, nice village. The Fortezza was very impressive and the pictures we took were great. My favorite village was Agia Galini. We went there for a daily excursion as it is about an hour away from Rethymno town. When I left, I took some bottles of raki with me as a souvenir from Crete. It may be a strong drink but really special, I haven't drunk anything like this before.

    Rethymno
I went to Crete last summer but, unfortunately, I couldn?t visit all the things I wanted to?

this island is so big and I went there only for 2 weeks?but I will definitely go back there.

I stayed at the lovely town of Rethymno which I just loved!

It is full of beautiful buildings and has a unique and very attractive atmosphere.

I also went to the lovely coastal village of Agia Galini and to the beautiful mountain villages of Anogia and Spili.

As for the beaches, they were all so wonderful I couldn?t believe it! My favourite one was the one called Preveli which looks like a lagoon and has a palm trees and turquoise waters.

From there, I had the chance to visit the Monastery of Preveli which is very interesting and which is located in a place of great natural beauty.

I hope I will managed to go back to Crete soon so I can visit the other parts of this incredible island.
