In brief, there is no airport on Hydra, so the only way to get to the island is by taking the ferry. Ferries arrive at Hydra Port, which is located in the main town. Note that the use of wheeled vehicles (including cars, motorbikles and even bicycles) is not allowed on the island.

Hydra is an island in the heart of the Saronic Gulf, and it is an excellent choice for a short trip from Athens, as it is only 68 kilometers from the Greek capital. The port of Hydra is situated right next to the main town, and it receives direct connections from the port of Piraeus in Athens, from two other Saronic islands (Poros and Spetses), as well as from Porto Heli and Ermioni in the Peloponnese.

 

POPULAR ROUTES TO HYDRA

Hydra can easily be accessed by ferry and routes are available throughout the year. You can approach Hydra by ferry from the port of Piraeus in Athens, from the Saronic islands of Poros and Spetses, as well as from the seaside towns of Porto Heli and Ermioni in the eastern Peloponnese. Direct routes from Aegina or from other islands of the Aegean Sea to Hydra are not available.

• From Athens

Most travelers depart for Hydra from Athens. Ferries leave from Piraeus, the main port of the Greek capital, which is situated only 12 km from the city center.

  • How long is the duration of the trip?

The duration of the ferry trip varies from a minimum of 1 hour and 10 minutes to 2 hours, depending on whether or not the boat makes a stop to another island before arriving at Hydra port. The route is served exclusively by high-speed ferries.

A standard ticket from Piraeus costs between €38 and €40.

  • What ferries operate from Athens to Hydra?

Only high-speed vessels/catamarans run by Blue Star and Alpha Lines operate this route.
High-speed vessels are smaller in size than conventional ferries, and they are also faster. There is no deck, so there are only numbered airplane-type seats. There is a snack bar where you can buy a coffee or refreshments and snacks. The high-speed vessels serving this route have no garages, as no vehicles are allowed on the island of Hydra. Unfortunately, due to their small size, they are easily affected by bad weather conditions and there may be delays.
