Nafplion Town

General information

Town Nafplion: Known to the world as an important center of the ancient Greek civilization, the enchanting sea side town of Nafplion amazes every visitor.

The town used to be the capital of Greece from 1829-1834 and is now the administrative center of Argolida prefecture. Inhabited by a population of around 12,000, the town thrives on tourism throughout the year. The town itself dates back to the Neolithic period and is also surrounded by the world heritage sites of Epidaurus and Mycenae.

The intertwined cobbled streets with its bars, restaurants and taverns offering delicious local cuisine and excellent beverages are hot spots for tourists who come here to relish a glimpse of antiquity. The eternal relics of the old town like the two Turkish mosques, the archeological museum, Agios Spiridonas Church, whose walls are still scarred by the bullet marks that killed Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of the newly liberated country in 1828, are bustling with tourists from all over the world.

There are impregnable fortresses of the Byzantine era overlooking this quaint town. The town is truly unique as it preserves fascinating, timeless relics from three different historical phases. Elements of Neo-classical, Venetian and Turkish styles can be found in the architecture of the buildings. Syntagma square is the nerve center of the town with restaurants and souvenir shops selling handicrafts.

The harbor waterfront is an ideal getaway to enjoy the panorama of the Mediterranean sunset. The town is well connected to all the major cities of Greece and has a well equipped tourist infrastructure with accommodations ranging from costly, luxurious resorts and hotels to inexpensive, yet comfortable, taverns and inns. The serene, enchanting beaches in the area are snorkeling paradises, equipped with the latest water sport technologies and this is the reason why these beaches are frequented by water sport enthusiasts from across the globe.
