Thessaloniki Tourism

Established in the Hellenistic times by King Cassander of Macedonia, the historic city of Thessaloniki is the second biggest town in Greece after Athens. Over the centuries, it has developed into a significant commercial and transportation hub, and is, in fact, the capital of the entire administrative region of Macedonia.

Tourism in Thessaloniki is quite developed, with the International Airport of Thessaloniki receiving direct flights from several European cities throughout the year. Of course, it is also possible to reach Thessaloniki by road from other neighboring countries in the Balkans. At the same time, Thessaloniki Port is the primary gateway between northern Greece and the islands of the Eastern Aegean, with a weekly route being available all year round; seasonal itineraries to the verdant Sporades are also available during the summer months.

Around the city center and the various neighborhoods of Thessaloniki, tourists will find all the necessary facilities, including a plethora of accommodations, shops, restaurants, car rental agencies and much more. A tourist information center is also conveniently located in the central Aristotelous Square, helping visitors to get all the necessary information regarding their trip. Moreover, there is a tourist police department for any problems that might arise during your tourism in Thessaloniki. The cityscape still reflects the rich history of Thessaloniki, bearing traces of all the various cultures and civilizations that have flourished there over the years. Thus, with its impressive number of museums and monuments, many of which have been declared UNESCO World Heritage sites, it is a true delight for all art enthusiasts. The historic center extends around Aristotelous Square and comprises a number of districts, including Dimocratias Square (Vardaris), the so-called Ladadika, Kapani, Navarinou Square, the Rotonda quarter and Agia Sophia.

Known as Ano Poli, the Old Town is the heritage-listed district north of the town center and boasts such landmarks as the imposing Castle and several Ottoman and Byzantine structures. Among the most notable sights are the famous White Tower along the bustling waterfront, the Rotonda, and the magnificent Agios Dimitrios Church.

Last but not least, Thessaloniki is a great starting spot for exploring other places of outstanding natural or cultural beauty around Macedonia. Nicknamed the Nymph of the Thermaic Gulf, Thessaloniki is situated close to the verdant Halkidiki peninsula, whose stunning beaches make it an ever-popular holiday destination. Fascinating tours are also available to the ancient cities of Pella and Vergina, Mount Athos, the enchanting Lake Kerkini, and many more captivating locations.
