Best Time to Visit Lefkada

Wondering what is the best time for your trip to Lefkada? There are many things to consider before booking your holidays, depending on how you are planning to spend your time once you get there and what are your needs in terms of facilities.

Jump to: High SeasonShoulder SeasonLow Season

In brief, the best time to visit Lefkada is June, July and August. This is when the biggest number of visitors plan their holidays and the reason is none other than the lovely sunny weather.
July and August make up the peak season when all of the island's tourist facilities get super busy.

The shoulder season and the low season are good options only if you are into an alternative kind of vacation. This is not the best time if you enjoy swimming at the beach since the weather gets colder. However, there are a few things to do even if you are an off-season visitor and you will certainly not be disappointed!

Visit Lefkada in the High Season (Summer)

Lefkada is known for being an amazing summer destination and this is when most visitors arrive at the island. The best time to enjoy the sea is the months of June, July and August when the temperature is just perfect. This is considered the peak season when the majority of Greek travelers also visit the island. During the high season, popular beach resorts get crowded and the island's villages become very lively.

Weather Conditions

June, July and August are the warmest months in Lefkada and the best time in terms of weather. The temperature reaches 28°C and there are about 12 hours of daylight. It almost never rains and the sea temperature is ideal for swimming. Heatwaves are rare in Lefkada and the temperature is usually lower than that of other Greek islands.

Things to do in Summer

During the summer, visiting the exotic beaches of Lefkada is an absolute must. Watersports such as windsurfing are quite popular on the island, while organized tours and other activities are always available during the high season. You can spend time exploring museums, monasteries and other attractions, all around the island and alternatively, there are many picturesque villages worth visiting that are either located by the sea or on the mountains.

Tips

Since the high season is considered by many the best time to visit Lefkada, the island's best hotels sell out easily, so it is highly advised to book a place to stay at least a few months in advance.
If you do not enjoy crowded places, consider avoiding touristy areas and book your accommodation in less busy areas of the island.

Visit Lefkada in the Shoulder Season (Spring & Autumn)

The warm summer weather starts in late May and continues all the way into September. Despite the nice weather, spring and autumn are not very popular among visitors, although many hotels, restaurants and other facilities operate fully at this time of the year. Visiting Lefkada during the shoulder season may not be ideal for spending time at the beach but it will allow you to enjoy the peaceful side of the island.

Weather Conditions

During the shoulder season, the temperature in Lefkada usually reaches up to 18°C. Most days are sunny, although occasional rainfalls do occur. Swimming in the sea is still an option, although it is not for everyone. The days are quite long and Lefkada is not considered a windy island.

Things to Do in Spring & Autumn

The mild temperatures of the shoulder season create a good opportunity for outdoor activities on the island, such as hiking at the waterfalls of Nydri and other beautiful natural locations or going on long strolls around the charming Town of Lefkada. With a rental car, you will be able to travel around the island and explore locations other than the popular beach resorts comfortably.

When visiting during the autumn, you can attend the annual Trata festival which takes place in September and is a celebration dedicated to sailors and fishermen. Music, dancing and delicious fish barbeques take place for everyone to enjoy. October 28th is another national holiday with special events and celebrations.

Tips

Availability increases during the summer season and many hotels provide special offers. This is the best time to visit the island for budget traveling and the sooner you book a hotel, the better the prices are going to be.

Visit Lefkada in the Low Season (Winter)

Late autumn, winter and early spring are the least busy months for Lefkada. There are barely any tourists on the island, so this is the best time to get to know the authentic local life. As an island with a Mediterranean climate, Lefkada has mild weather, even during the winter. The biggest disadvantage is that the sea is too cold and there are not that many things to do, compared to the rest of the year.!

Weather Conditions

The average temperature for Lefkada in the summer season is 10°C, although it can get lower than that, especially during the winter. There are at least a few rainy days per month and several cloudy ones as well. Gradually, the days become significantly shorter.

Things to do in Winter

During the winter, Lefkada Town offers the widest variety of options in terms of things to do. You can visit its landmarks and check out the cafes and restaurants. In order to get to know the local life, you can visit small traditional villages that do not attract any tourists at this time of the year.

Tips

If you decide to visit Lefkada during the low season, you should keep in mind that many hotels and restaurants remain closed for at least a few months, especially the ones located in seafront settlements. If you want a wide variety in terms of facilities, places such as Lefkada Town which remain lively all year long are the best option.
