General information

The small village of Platani lies halfway between Kos Town and the archaeological site of Asclepieion, just 2.5 km from the town center. It got its name from the big plane tree (platanos) located in the center of the village square. Most of its inhabitants are Greek citizens of Turkish origin, which is why the village is also known as Kermentes, named after Keramos in Asia Minor.

There is a mosque in Platani that dates back to the 18th century as well as an Orthodox Church. The mosque is the only place of worship of its kind in the area and features a painting depicting verses from the Koran. The central square boasts a collection of traditional taverns serving delicious dishes made with authentic recipes from Asia Minor. Platani also houses a Turkish cemetery and a pine-covered Jewish cemetery.
