Schinoussa Architecture

Being part of the Small Cyclades, the architecture of Schinoussa wins over the heart of its visitors at first sight. Chora is the capital of the island and one of the two traditional settlements sitting on top of a rock, as locals needed protection from the pirates' invasions. Houses are characterized for their original Cycladic architectural form, dressed in total white, with blue shutters and doors. A stroll through the winding streets of the village is a chance to discover the area's beautiful features and charming spots.

The other settlement of Schinoussa, Messaria, lies among vineyards, not very far from the main town. It distinguishes for the Church of Evagelistria and the locals are mainly involved in agricultural activities and tourism. At first sight, seems like time has stopped for Schinoussa island revealing the intact character of the neighborhoods, the beautiful colorful yards and the whitewashed paths which lead to the waterfront.

At the entrance of the port, there is a small theatre, a fine piece of work used for cultural events. In the heart of Chora lies a beautiful church and some remains from a medieval castle built during the Venetian presence.
