Prehistoric Acropolis

Location: Panermos

At Korfari Hill, above Panermos beach in the southern part of Naxos, excavations brought to light a prehistoric acropolis, whose remains are of outstanding importance.

The stone settlement dates back at 25000 BC and consisted of 20 room spaces, circled by fortification that featured five towers. A magnificent achievement for its time, this settlement signifies the transition from the farming period to the hierarchical society, where the formation of the urban character began to take place. Thus, this findings reflect a momentous leap forward as they document the social evolution within not only the Naxian, but also the Greek community.

Relevant findings of the later Mycenaean period can be found also in the archaeological site of Grotta, in Chora.
