Ancient Aqueduct

Location: Melanes

One of the most impressive archaeological findings in Naxos are the remainings of the ancient aqueduct that can be traced in various locations on the island. Relevant research shed light on the origins of the constructions and placed the aqueduct’s creation in the Archaic period, during the reign of the tyrant Lygdamis. At that time, lack of water was a major issue for the residents of the Chora, and the Naxians started to built water pipes, starting from Flerio, near the village Melanes. The constructions continued during the Roman period and more elevated techniques were used, showcasing the virtuosity of the workers, especially considering that parts of the pipes were in a tunnel that had to be dug to connect mountainous regions.

Nowadays, parts of the ancient aqueduct have been preserved and restored and can be visited in various locations in Naxos, such as Barou, Kaminia, Trani Fountana, and Kastro, while in Flerio there is an info center where you can learn more regarding the aqueduct’s history.
