Kourtaliotiko Gorge is located in the region of Rethymno and is 3 kilometers long.
It is one of the most impressive hiking destinations in Crete, with dense vegetation, caves, enormous rock formations and ponds where you can swim.
Starting near the Koxare village, it is enclosed by massive rocks with a maximum height of around 600 meters! Being the natural habitat of many kinds of birds of prey and other species of fauna and flora, the gorge is extremely important to the local biodiversity. It is traversed by the Kourtaliotis River, which opens into the sea on Preveli Beach and boasts a lush palm tree forest, the second largest in Crete after that of Lassithi.
Walking along the gorge, in a dark and narrow spot that can be reached by swimming upriver for a few meters, you will also find a magnificent waterfall. Thereabouts, you will also come across an old stone-built bridge, which you can cross and continue hiking until you reach Preveli beach.
