General information

Rethymno Stavromenos: The sandy strip along the north coast of Rethymno, Crete, offers many different versions of beaches for visitors. Among them is the tranquil bay of Stavromenos, a golden beach lying 11 km east of Rethymno Town. The small village of Stavromenos can be reached by the local bus from Rethymno to Stavromenos, leaving ever half an hour. A 500m walk from the village takes you to the beach.

There are parasols and sun-beds for sunbathing, while a stroll up the hill slopes rewards with a beautiful view. A couple of traditional taverns near the beach serve scrumptious Cretan dishes and local drinks. The village of Stavromenos has shops lining the street and mini-markets as well. The sea turtles Carretta Carretta visit the beach at night from May to September, during their nesting season.

A part of the beach may be protected and closed to visitors during these days, so that the loggerhead turtles can lay their eggs in peace. For the party hoppers Platenes, near Adele beach 4kms to the west, offers water sports, discos and night bars.
