General information

Mires Heraklion: Mires is a modern settlement situated 55 km south west of Heraklion Town, in the plain of Messaras. It is an important commercial centre with a huge park just outside the village full of verdant trees, paved paths, beautiful fountains and kiosks. Beaches can be found approximately 14 kilometres from Mires.

All kind of accommodations and restaurants are available.Interesting visiting from the village is the monastery of Panagia Kalyviani located 6 kilometres west of the town where popular art such as textiles and needlework are exhibited.

Also interesting is the Monastery of Panagia Odigitria (Leading Virgin Mary) which was built in 1568, with remains of its surrounding walls. This monastery was an active meeting place during the Cretan revolt against Turkish yoke.
