Chania Therissos

General information

Therissos is a small, picturesque village situated on the foot of the White Mountains, 16 km south of Chania Town, built at an altitude of 580 meters. The village is famous for its incredible natural beauty, its glorious history, and its dairy.

Therissos played an important role in the history of Crete during the 19th century. It was the birthplace of the Cretan revolutionists Vassilis, Stefanos, and Giannis Halis, who participated in most of the great battles against the Turks in Crete and the Peloponnese. It also served as a crucial location during the Cretan Revolution due to the fact that it is naturally fortified. Eleftherios Venizelos, the great politician and statesman, had his headquarters in a house at Therissos when he declared the union of Crete with the newly built Greek State. Today, the house is open to the public, and a museum dedicated to the revolution can also be found in the village.

The lovely village boasts various accommodation choices as well as some excellent cafes and taverns. You can taste delicious local specialties under the natural shade of the area’s large trees. You can also admire the cave located 2.5 kilometers north of the village, on the left bank of the Kladissos River, where traces of Neolithic and Minoan settlements have been discovered. If you’re feeling adventurous, there is a climbing spot in the Therissos Gorge, through which you can reach the highest peak of the White Mountains.
