Chania is located on the westernmost side of Crete and it has two ports. Chania Port (also called the Port of Souda or the New Port of Chania) lies 6.5 km southeast of Chania Town, and receives direct connections only from the port of Piraeus. The other one, the port of Kissamos, lies 41 km west of Chania Town. Passenger ferries arrive from the port of Piraeus, Gythio in the Peloponnese, and the islands of Kythira and Antikythira.

POPULAR ROUTES TO CHANIA

Chania is easily accessible by ferry and routes are available all year round. You can approach Chania by ferry from the port of Piraeus in Athens, or from the port of Gythio in the Peloponnese and from the Ioanian islands of Kythira and Antikythira. Direct routes from other islands of the Aegean Sea to Chania are not available.

From Athens

Most travelers depart for Chania from Athens. Ferries leave from Piraeus, the main port of the Greek capital, which is situated only 12 km from the city center. Ferries from Piraeus reach both ports of Chania (Souda and Kissamos).

The crossing lasts around 8.5 hours and is served exclusively by conventional ferries.

Conventional ferries by Blue Star operate this route. Those are large vessels with many indoor and outdoor spaces, but lounge and deck seats are not numbered, so they tend to get crowded in high season. These ferries also boast cabins for long journeys and large garages that can carry a great number of vehicles. All indoor areas are air-conditioned, and snack bars are available on the premises. There are also designated areas for pets. Challenging weather conditions rarely affect those vessels and travelers can enjoy the beautiful sea views on deck.

• • Where is the ferry port in Chania?

Chania prefecture has got two ports. The main port, which is also called the port of Souda or the New Port, is located 6.5 km southeast of Chania Town and 14 km from the airport. The other one, the port of Kissamos, is located in northwestern Chania, 41 km west of Chania Town and 59 km away from the international airport of Chania. Both receive passenger boats from Athens (Piraeus), while Kissamos Port is also connected to Gythio (Peloponnese) and the islands of Kythira and Antikythira. Connections from/to other Aegean islands are not available.

Both the ports and Chania Town are well connected to many beaches by local public buses (KTEL). For example, you can go to the popular Agia Marina and to Balos Lagoon, as well as to Falassarna Beach, which is located in an area of unique natural beauty. Of course, visitors can also take the bus to the pristine Elafonisi beach, which boasts spectacular pink sand. Alternatively, you can rent a car and explore the gorgeous beaches of Chania more freely.
