Chania Balos beach

General information

Balos in Chania is one of the most famous and mesmerizing beaches in Greece. It’s a lagoon located 53 km from Chania Town, on the west side of the Gramvoussa cape. Its white sand and turquoise waters glistening under the sun create a scenery that truly resembles a painting. The sea is not very deep, and the waters are warm, making it suitable for children and the elderly. The beach is semi-organized, as it provides umbrellas, chaises, and a small canteen, but no facilities like changing rooms and showers.

Two islets are located near the beach; Agria Gramvoussa and Imeri Gramvoussa. On the latter, you can find an impressive medieval castle as well as the remains of a shipwrecked boat. Both of these sights, along with the gorgeous beach of Gramvoussa, are really worth a visit if you find yourself at Balos.

More about Balos

The lagoon is located along the Gramvousa Peninsula, which is full of precious flora and fauna. For this reason, the ecosystem is protected by the program Natura 2000. In the area, 400 different species of plants have been found, many of which are rare and endemic to Crete. In addition, more than 100 species of birds have been recorded so far, as Gramvoussa is a very important place for migratory birds. The most widely known animal in the ecosystem is the Monachus Monachus monk seal, which gives birth in the caves under the water. Another famous species that does not lay eggs there but often goes to seek food is the Carreta Carreta sea turtle.
