The Orthodox Metropolitan Church of Santorini, Cyclades: This church sits prominently towards the bottom of the town of Fira and can be seen from a great distance and from many parts of Santorini. The church was built in 1827 and offers an impressive view to the caldera and the volcano of Santorini. In the year 1956, the building was damaged during the catastrophic earthquake but renovated soon after.
It is a beautiful cathedral with a nice mosaic on the outside and an impressive bell tower. Rolling arches create a peaceful courtyard. The church's inside is adorned with beautiful frescoes made by the local artist Christoforos Asimis.
The Orthodox Metropolitan Church is located at the center of Fira just a 3-minute walk from the Central bus station and from a private parking lot.
Private transfers: We recommend using an online pre-booked Santorini transfer service, which provides transfer by taxi, minibus or private VIP car and arranging a pickup directly from your hotel. Alternatively, there’s the option of arranging a pickup by a local driver directly at the following numbers: 0030 690 679 4316, 0030 22860 22555.
Public transfers: Fira is where the central bus station of the island is located. There are bus connections between this bus station and the most areas of the island. Consider that time schedules might change according to the season. Check the official timetables here. Tip: Since buses don’t always stop in every scheduled stop of their itinerary, our advice to visitors is to inform the driver about their final destination, so that he makes a stop there.
