Chania Spilia

General information

Spilia is a beautiful traditional village located 30 km west of Chania Town and only 4 km from Kolimbari Village. It’s situated among rich greenery, in a lovely landscape, and boasts traditional, picturesque houses and alleys.

Spilia means "cave" in Greek, and the village was named after the cave of Saint John on Marathokefalas Hill nearby. In the 1834 census, 60 Christian families and one Muslim were recorded. Later on, in 1881, there was significant growth in the village’s population, counting 555 residents and 124 families, all of whom were Christians.

If you’re looking for something to eat, there are a few traditional taverns and restaurants around the area that serve delicious, homemade specialties. The atmosphere and the locals who work there are very heartwarming and welcoming.

More about Spilia

Spilia is popular for the lovely churches that are found in the area. At the center of the village, you will see the church of Archangel Michael, which was built during the 14th century and boasts impressive Byzantine icons. The church of Panagia Myrtidiotissa, the Cathedral, is another significant church in the region, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. On the inside, you will see beautiful murals and the historic icon of Mary, gifted by a monastery in Kythira. Inside a large rock, you can discover the picturesque chapel of Agioi Pantes. In addition, the village has an ecclesiastical museum that exhibits a collection of extremely valuable religious treasures and relics. Another interesting sight to visit is the Cave of Saint John the Hermit, about 1 km from Spilia. It’s a large cave adorned with lovely stalactites, housing a small church dedicated to Saint John.
