Our Impressions: |
This village sits right at the north of the island and there is a different kind of atmosphere here. The village is very much based around its waterfront with many yachts worth thousands and thousands of pounds moored up here. The village itself is very nice with some beautiful architecture. The houses are a range of pretty colours. The waterfront is also notable for the sheer number of restaurants crowded into quite a small area. It is perhaps best viewed in the evening when you will find hundreds of people sat outside enjoying the seafood on offer, the light of the village reflecting from the water in the harbour.
The Natural and Environmental museum lies just up from the waterfront. Set up and run by volunteers it offers some interesting facts about the island along with some very interesting exhibits such as the wreckage of a British Beachfighter plane shot down years ago on the island. There is a strong theme of ecology here and the same building also hosts a scuba diving office which organizes trips to monitor the island’s sea life.
On the headland to the west you can find the village’s lighthouse which stands close to a previous incarnation. The walk from the village to here is well recommended, you meander through a pine wood with great views back towards the waterfront.
There is a massive amount of tourism in this small village but it manages to hold its beauty against all odds. The architecture here is picturesque and this has a lot to do with the fact that this was only village not devastated by the 1953 earthquake. It may be a bit out on a limb but Fiskardo is a trip well worth making.
