Temple of Artemis

Location: Town

The Temple of Artemis in Corfu Greece, Ionian: The magnificent temple of Artemis was a typical Doric temple. Dedicated to the Greek goddess Artemis, the temple was located at the place where the lagoon of Chalikiopoulos is today, at the extreme north of the city. The temple was massive in size with as many as seventeen gigantic columns and it was probably built from 590 to 580 B.C. by highly skilled Corinthian craftsmen.

The largest part of the temple is ruined today and many parts have been moved to the Archaeological Museum of Corfu. The museum showcases the pediment of the Artemis temple which is impeccably preserved. A characteristic feature of the temple pediment is the Medusa and many scholars regard this as the finest specimen of prehistoric sculpture.
