Inside the gallery, visitors have the opportunity to see some of the most representative works of Greek modern art spanning the 19th and 20th centuries. Works of Theophilos, Yannis Tsarouchis, Konstantinos Maleas, Fotis Kontoglou, Spyros Vassiliou, Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas, Yannis Spiropoulos, Nikos Engonopoulos, and other prominent Greek artists are featured here. Although the museum owns about 690 pieces, only 90 of them are available for public display. The paintings exhibited are changed at regular intervals.
The founder of the Municipal Art Gallery of Rhodes was Andreas Ioannou, a historian of Modern Greek Art and the Prefect of the Dodecanese in 1948. Studying modern Greek art since the 1950s, at a time when even the National Gallery of Athens would focus its interest in the 19th century, Andreas Ioannou established this gallery intending to systematically own and protect the work of modern artists. The efforts to establish the gallery started in the 1950s, with the official opening being held in 1964.
Rhodes Municipal Art Gallery welcomes guests Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 20:30.
