They could treat various diseases and conditions, such as arthritis, obesity, diabetes, tropical diseases, dysentery, malaria, allergies, asthma, cystitis, and intestinal conditions. In 1927, the Italian governors of Rhodes ordered a systematic study of these waters by distinguished hydrologists and doctors. The study concluded that the waters had a range of important properties and suggested the development of the area. In December 1928, the first buildings were constructed above the thermal springs, which were considered royal grounds in order to guarantee the perfection of the work. This project was assigned to the architect Pietro Lombardi and was finished only a few months later.

The facilities at the Springs of Kallithea were inaugurated by the Italians in July 1929 and attracted a large number of patients and scientists from the entire world. The Spa was constructed in the Moorish style of architecture and included pebble stone mosaics, the Rotonda Hall (where once thermal waters gushed), a terrace, an impressive patio and stairs at the entrance. The wonderful gardens feature palm and pine trees, flowers and many exotic plants. Below the spring facilities, there are small coves with crystal thermal water.
At the end of the 20th century, the Spa Building fell into abandonment and neglect. The local council overtook the restoration work that lasted for many years. Finally, the renovated spa town opened its doors in July 2007. Since then, Kallithea Springs has welcomed hundreds of visitors every day looking to bathe in the crystal-blue waters and marvel at the unique combination of natural beauty and stunning architecture.
