Founded in the 17th century by Ioannis Kottounios, a distinguished Greek Scholar, the School of Agios Tafos (Holy Grave) was the first Greek School of Sifnos. Renowned teachers like Emmanuel Trochanis and Nikolas Chrysogelos taught at the school, which was originally housed in the remarkable Monastery of Agios Ioannis Chrissostomos in the village of Petali. It was later transferred to Kastro, the capital of Sifnos at the time. The School of Agios Tafos, also known as Hellinomouseio or the Educational Institution of the Archipelagos, no longer operates today but it was a very important institution for its time, offering basic education to the children of Sifnos and other islands of the Cyclades.
