Santorini Tourism

Travel guides around the world refer to Santorini as the ultimate summer destination. The island provides an unspoiled landscape created by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. Today, it constitutes a unique pole of attraction with astonishing rock formations and traditional whitewashed settlements built at the edge of the caldera.

Due to the developed tourism in Santorini, guests can find all the necessary information regarding their trip at the tourist office in Fira. There is also a tourist police for any problems that might occur during your vacation. Of course, people can get information through our Santorini travel guide before visiting the island.

Santorini is a Greek island that belongs to the Cyclades complex. Strategically located in the Aegean Sea, it is a very popular holiday destination among both natives and foreigners. Also referred to as Thira, this is the place where one of the biggest volcanic eruptions in history occurred. A submerged caldera and a crater are what has remained from the volcano, which is still active. The volcano, the caldera, and the romantic sunsets appeal to thousands of people every summer.

Archaeological excavations date the first human presence on Santorini island back to the Neolithic Period. Excavations have unearthed the ancient site of Akrotiri, which used to be a Minoan colony. In fact, the settlement was found almost intact, covered in ashes. That indicates that the town was destroyed by the volcanic eruption in about 1600 BC.

In addition, Akrotiri is frequently correlated with the Lost Atlantis. That theory has inspired numerous artists, including poets like Georgios Seferis who wrote a poem called Santorini, musicians like Yanni, and directors who filmed movie scenes there, such as the famous movie of Lara Croft. The unique geology of Santorini has also caught the attention of many scientists and research has been conducted on the topic, including the recent research by National Geographic.

Fira, the capital of Santorini island, is perched on a clifftop and comprises a place where tourists flock in high numbers. The village offers a panoramic view of the submerged volcano. The houses are whitewashed with sunbathed verandas and blue-domed churches. Fira gets pretty busy in summer as it is the transportation hub of the island. Many conferences are also organized in the settlement, particularly in the Nomikos Conference Centre.

Oia is considered by many as the most enchanting place on the island since it offers superb sunset views. Kastro walls are the best place to watch the sunset in Oia. The houses and paved streets border the caldera. The village retains a peaceful ambiance and has developed into a cultural center, with several Greek art galleries, jewelry, and souvenir shops. Over the last few years, Oia has become a special place for free running, also known as parkour.

Perissa, on the southern side, is among the most famous beaches on Santorini, boasting black pebbles and clean waters. The ruins of Ancient Thera lie on a hill above Perissa and provide the most breathtaking views. Kamari is another popular beach resort on the island, ideal for a leisurely stroll - so is Perivolos. The calm environment, water sports, and turquoise waters are the trump cards of the beaches. The most famous beach, however, is the Red beach, with hot waters and black and red volcanic pebbles.
