Santorini is a Greek island, which belongs to the Cyclades group of islands. Strategically situated in the Aegean Sea, it is a very popular holiday destination. Also referred to as Thira, this is where one of the biggest volcanic eruptions in world history took place. A submerged caldera and a crater are what exist today from the volcano, which is still active by the way. The volcano, the caldera and the romantic sunsets attract thousands of tourists every summer to this beautiful Greek island.
Archaeological excavations date the first human presence in Santorini island back in the Neolithic Period. History says that an ancient Minoan colony existed there after some excavations near Akrotiri, a famous archaeological site in Santorini island. In fact, Akrotiri was found almost intact covered in ashes, which shows that the town was destroyed by the volcanic eruption in about 1,500 B.C.
In fact, Akrotiri is frequently connected to the Lost Atlantis by scientists, a theory that has inspired artists, poets such as the Greek poet Seferis who wrote a poem called Santorini, musicians like Yanni and many directors who filmed movies there, such as the famous movie of Lara Croft. The special geology of Santorini has also attracted the attention of many scientists and various researches have been made on this issue, including the recent research by National Geographic.
Fira, the capital of Santorini island, is perched on a clifftop and is a place where tourists flock in high numbers. Fira offers a panoramic view of the submerged volcano. The houses are painted in white with sunbathed verandas and blue-domed churches. It gets pretty busy in summer as this is the transportation hub of the island. Many conferences are also organized in Fira, particularly in the Nomikos Conference Centre.
Oia is considered by many as the most enchanting place on this island as it offers superb sunset views. Kastro walls are the best place to watch the sunset in Oia. The houses and paved streets border the caldera. This village has a peaceful environment and has developed into a cultural center, with several Greek art galleries, jewellery, and souvenir shops. Over the last years, Oia has become a special place for free running, also known as parkour, and some free running events are organized there.
Perissa, on the southern side, is among the most famous beaches in Santorini island, with black pebbles and clean water. The ruins of Ancient Thera are found on a hill above Perissa and give the most breathtaking views. Kamari is another popular beach resort of Santorini island, ideal for a leisurely stroll and so is Perivolos. The calm environment, water sports, and the emerald blue waters are the chief attractions in the beaches of Santorini island. The most famous beach, however, is the Red beach, with hot water and black and red volcanic pebbles.
