It was an unexpected -yet delightful- surprise to learn that the famous travel guide publisher, Lonely Planet, chose to name the region of Peloponnese as the Top destination in Europe for 2016. This special honor is a perfect opportunity to reconsider Greece as a solely island destination – and to help you, we have gathered the places where one can experience the unique beauty and atmosphere of the Peloponnesian land:

#Nafplio

Once the nation’s first capital, Nafplio is a famous destination both among locals and foreigners; its picturesqueness is irresistible, and a stroll between the backstreets and the neoclassic buildings will travel you to another era. Tolo and Leonidio are also highly preferred, and a drive through the euphoric land of Argos will amaze you with its beauty. Do not miss the chance to watch a play at the ancient theatre of Epidaurus, it will certainly be an experience of a lifetime.

#Laconia

The Spartans had chosen their location wisely; the laconic land is famous for the fortresses of Mystra near Sparti as well as the unique castle town of Monemvasia in the southern edge of the continent. The region of Mani with its rocky landscape and towers is a wonder to the eye and one of the most peculiar landscapes of Greece, alluring visitors with its raw beauty. Gytheio is also delightfully picturesque.

#Kalamata

And not just Kalamata. The entire region of Messinia is considered one of the most beautiful in Greece. Pylos, Navarino and Methoni are just few of the must-see destinations. The orgastic green nature is breathtaking and the beaches -especially that of Voidokilia- are considered among the world’s finest. Do not forget to taste the amazing olive oil and its by-products, exported all over the world.

Mountainous Peloponnese offers amazing opportunities for tourism, too -and is also ideal for winter vacations. Arcadia’s must-see destinations are the traditional villages of Dimitsana and Stemnitsa, known for the natural beauty of their surroundings and their scenic environment. Kalavryta in Achaea constitutes the ideal opportunity to come closer to the traditional side of Greece, known for their picturesqueness and the numerous resorts (preferred frequently by lovers of ski) while the artificial lake Doksa near Corinth is an enchanting and peaceful destination, ideal for those who want to relax.
