Monastery of Agios Nikolaos Anapafsa
The Holy Monastery of Agios Nikolaos Anapafsa in Meteora: The Holy Monastery of Agios Nikolaos Anapafsa was built in the 16th century on the initiative of Dionysius, who was the Abbot of Larissa Town at that time. It is built on top of a giant rock, as all of the Meteora monasteries, and is one among the six inhabited monasteries. It can be found on the road to the Monastery of Megalo (Grand) Meteoron.
The main church of Agios Nikolaos Anapafsa is known for its well-preserved wall paintings, made in 1527 by the renowned Cretan painter Theophanis o Kris, also known as Theophanis Bathas-Strelitzas. Some deserted monasteries are also found in the surrounding area, such as the monastery of Agios Ioannis Prodromos, the monastery of Pantokratoras and the chapel of Panagia Doupiani. This monastery is usually open every day till the afternoon and remains closed in winter.
