The Monastery of Agios Nektarios

Coming from the capital of the island, the monastery is located opposite the mountain of Paleochora (Old village), where the old capital used to be.

The monastery was built between 1904 and 1910 by a monk, Nektarios, who was one of the latest canonized people of the Greek Orthodox Church.

The Church of Panagia Faneromeni

Situated at 15 minutes walk south of the capital, the little church of Panagia Faneromeni (the Appeared Virgin) is a lovely underground church that houses a rare and valuable icon of the Virgin Mary.

According to local legend, a building was to be erected near the site of the present church and the architect, the night before the beginning of the constructions,

the island, has been buried in the monastery and is said to have healing powers and to be miraculous.

The main church located on front of the monastery is a newly built huge bronze and white church, one of the largest places of Orthodox worship in the Balkans, constructed in honour of Saint Nektarios.

The church was built on the site of an older Byzantine church. The rest of the monastery consists in Nektarios personal residence and books.
