Kefalonia Villages: Poros village in Kefalonia
Kefalonia Poros 01 Poros Kefalonia: Poros is located 41 kilometres south-west of Kefalonia’s capital, with a population of about 1100 inhabitants. Poros is a picturesque village with a lovely port serving the harbour of Patras and the port of Killini (in the Peloponnese). It is standing over a small rise and has a lovely main square full of taverns, shops and traditional cafes.

The dense and verdant vegetation along with the crystal blue sea make this village one of the most beautiful areas of the island.

The road that leads to Poros which and passes through a superb and impressive gorge is of particular beauty, and has supposedly been made by the mythical Hercules. The famous monastery of Atros is located in the area of Poros and can be visited.

Our Impressions:
The port of Poros is detached from the main part of the village by a headland. It is not a very busy port but boats can be obtained to Kylini from here. Above the port stand some green hills with the orange tiled houses standing out from the verdant landscape. The village itself is not very remarkable. There are two thin pebbly beaches at the waterfront and through the centre is a wide dried up river bed. The front is actually quite ugly with green metal structures designed to hold vines lying largely uncovered. A strong wind also blows in from the sea here. The main street in the village has the usual conveniences such as cashpoints etc.

In an island of lovely villages Poros is a major letdown. The beaches here are pretty poor while the village itself is ugly in the majority. Maybe the only reason to visit here is travel from the port itself. That said the gorge that you go through if you travel to the town from the west is magnificent; from here there is also a very, very badly rocky road that leads to the Atrouc Monastery high up on the hill.
