The KTEL buses are the only public transport available in Kefalonia. They are the cheapest way to travel between the island's regions and itineraries are frequent during summer.
A rental car is recommended, though, if you are keen on exploring the several areas and hidden beauties of Kefalonia.

Kefalonia is a large island with thousands of residents; that has contributed to the structure of a serving bus network that connects the central towns of Argostoli (capital) and Lixouri and the ports with several areas on the island. Timetables change according to the time of year, with more routes being available in the high season.

 

Getting to your destination

The main bus station of the KTEL buses is located in Argostoli. From there most buses depart for numerous areas of the island. There are ticket offices in the building, as there are in Lixouri, Sami and Poros.
The bus drivers do not stop at stops where people usually do not get off. If your destination is not a particularly touristy spot it is recommended that you let the driver know where you want to get off in advance.

 

Frequency

The timetables are posted on the official website of Kefalonia Buses. They are subject to change so it is recommended that you visit the website or contact one of the local ticket offices before arriving on the island by phone or e-mail.

From mid-June to mid-Spetember, buses depart heading to touristy places depart frequently. The route that heads to the airport from Argostoli is the most frequent one, with 10 itineraries per day. On the other hand, routes that reach more remote or not-so-known areas remain limited during summer, too.
