The Polygnotos Vagis Sculpture Museum on Thassos, Eastern Aegean: In the mountainous village of Potamia, next to the Church of the Annunciation of Virgin, there is the Sculpture Museum with the works of Polygnotos Vagis, a famous Greek sculptor who lived most of his life in New York, USA.
Polygnotos Vagis was born in Potamia in 1892. His father was from Thassos and his mother from Hydra. At the age of 19, he migrated to New York and started occupying with sculpture. In 1919, he got the American Citizenship because he served the American Navy in the 1st World War.
Then, he was registered to the "Beaux Arts Institute", where he studied for three years. Along time, he finds his personal style, following simplicity in his works. He goes out in nature and gathers elements from beaches and forests: stones, pebbles, wood, granite. These elements give figure to his work, inspired by nature, people and universal symbols. |
