Thassos Vagis Museum: The Polygnotos Vagis Sculpture Museum in Thassos Greece

The Polygnotos Vagis Sculpture Museum on Thassos, Eastern Aegean: In the mountainous village of Potamia, next to the Church of the Annunciation of Virgin, there is the Sculpture Museum with the works of Polygnotos Vagis, a famous Greek sculptor who lived most of his life in New York, USA.

Polygnotos Vagis was born in Potamia in 1892. His father was from Thassos and his mother from Hydra. At the age of 19, he migrated to New York and started occupying with sculpture. In 1919, he got the American Citizenship because he served the American Navy in the 1st World War.

Then, he was registered to the "Beaux Arts Institute", where he studied for three years. Along time, he finds his personal style, following simplicity in his works. He goes out in nature and gathers elements from beaches and forests: stones, pebbles, wood, granite. These elements give figure to his work, inspired by nature, people and universal symbols.

In 1963, he returns for the first time in his homeland, after 62 years. A few months later, he bequeaths all his work to the Government of Greece to be displayed in a national museum, preferably in Thassos. In 1965, Polygnotos Vagis dies in New York. His corps was later transfered in his homeland. The Sculpture Museum of Polygnotos Vagis opened in 1864 and comprises most of the artist's work.
