Byzantine shipwreck in marine park

• Category: News
A shipwreck that dates from the middle-Byzantine period was found a few days ago in the region of the Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades. In a depth of 17 to 42 metres, the archaeologists-divers along with scientists of an American oceanographic institute detected some broken items, mostly amphorae (ancient vases). A sample of the amphorae was taken so that a DNA testing shows its content. The shipwreck was discovered during a research that had been scheduled from September 24th to October 6th, 2010. The research aimed to explore this marine region, which in fact is abundant in shipwrecks of all time periods.
